A tire that evolves as it wears
The New York Times
As your tires wear, their ability to maintain grip on wet roads diminishes with reduced tread depth. Michelin has developed a tire that counters the effects of wear with channels that grow wider, and hidden rain grooves that emerge as the tire is used, along with a special rubber compound for wet conditions. Michelin says the tire, the Premier A/S, reduces stopping distances in wet conditions and, when worn, better resists hydroplaning — skating on a thin cushion of water — compared with a conventional tire.

Global tire sales to grow 4.3 percent per year

Led by growth from Asia, in particular China and India, demand for tires worldwide should increase 4.3 percent annually through 2017 to 2.9 billion units, according to market researchers Freedonia Group Inc. Seen in value terms, the study, "World Tires," expects the world market to grow nearly 8 percent annually, reaching $276 billion by 2017. The US will continue to be the world's second largest national consumer of tires, accounting for 13 percent of global demand in 2017, the research firm said.

Researcher: Low-resistance tires can save drivers money

A University of Michigan researcher has found a way for drivers to save up to $150 a year even if they don't change their driving habits. A change to low-resistance tires will do the trick, says Michael Sivak of the University of Michigan Transportation Research Institute. "Tire with low rolling resistance roll easier and, therefore, get better mileage than tires with high rolling resistance," said Sivak.

Dallas-Fort Worth small business lending soars 32 percent

Small Business Administration loans jumped 32 percent in fiscal 2013 in the Dallas-Fort Worth area, increasing to $813 million from $617 million the previous year. A strong business environment in Texas and the willingness of bankers to make small business loans contributed to the increase, according to Ann Marie Mehlum, the SBA's associate administrator for the Office of Capital Access.

While start/stop systems are as common to hybrids as regenerative braking, the fuel- and emission-saving technology is being adopted in traditional cars.
