Tire industry eyes new mercapto silanes

The tire industry is looking for ways to push the current generation of tires to the next level. An area that has gotten a lot of attention lately is how to improve fuel economy of tires. One way that tire companies are able to do this is by loading high amounts of silica into the tread compound, which requires larger amounts of silane coupling agents so that the silica can react with the polymer as a reinforcing filler. The old generation of silanes released ethanol when mixing the tire compound; this release of ethanol is classified as a volatile organic compound.

GM issues stop sale on 3 models after Goodyear tire recall

General Motors has made headlines plenty of times for recalls in the past year, but this particular safety campaign isn't a result of the automaker's mistake. The company has issued a stop sale on around 6,300 2015 Chevrolet Traverse, GMC Acadia and Buick Enclave utility vehicles after Goodyear announced a recall of 48,500 tires that will start sometime in February, the Detroit Free Press reported.

Kia recalls nearly 87,000 Forte sedans in US due to fire risk

Kia Motors is recalling 86,880 Forte sedans in the United States because a cooling fan resistor may overheat and melt, increasing the risk of a fire, according to documents filed by U.S. auto safety regulators. The recall involves certain model year 2014 Forte compact sedans and is expected to begin Feb. 24, according to documents on the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration website.

US sets preliminary duties on Chinese car and light truck tires

The United States is set to slap more duties on imports of tires from China after the Department of Commerce determined they were sold too cheaply in the United States. In a preliminary decision Jan. 21, Commerce set anti-dumping duties of up to 87.99 percent on car and light truck tires. Commerce had already set anti-subsidy duties of up to 81.29 percent after a complaint from U.S. trade unions.

Collision fatalities in Texas continue to rise

Over the past three years, most states have experienced a decline in fatal car accidents, while statistics in Texas continue to rise. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety blame speed, alcohol, and not wearing seatbelts for the escalation in fatal collisions.
