Michelin launches online tool for vintage tires

Michelin has launched an online reference tool dedicated to its range of tires for vintage and classic cars that offers expert advice on tire selection and a database of more than 2,400 vehicles. The site is available in English, German and French and is intended primarily for European customers, although the French tire maker calls it a "global service." The dealer locator feature on the site directs North American users to Coker Tire Co., which handles distribution of Michelin-brand vintage tires on this continent.

How consumers are interacting online

Infosys Limited recently produced a study stating that consumers interact more with retailers' Facebook pages more than company websites. The study said 38 percent of consumers interact with retailers' Facebook pages, whereas 36 percent interact with brands' websites. Eighty-nine percent of those who interact with a retailer online through any social media outlet said the interaction has an impact on their purchase. Is this true for the tire industry? What kinds of trends are happening right here in our industry?

EPA improves US - Mexico border with environmental projects
U.S. Environmental Protection Agency
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has awarded more than $720,000 in grants to fund 16 environmental projects along the Texas and New Mexico U.S-Mexico border. The projects include improving air monitoring, expanding waste collection and recycling, and improving environmental awareness and education among area residents.

RMA: Tires are built for more speed

When it comes to tires with higher speed ratings, 2013 was a year of growth across the board, according to the Rubber Manufacturers Association. In the domestic replacement segment, H-rated tire shipments were up 6.3 percent, while V-rated shipments were up 10 percent.

RMA announces National Tire Safety Week

This year's National Tire Safety Week will take place June 1-7, according to the Rubber Manufacturers Association. The annual National Tire Safety Week initiative is part of the association's "Be Tire Smart – Play Your Part" program. Be Tire Smart is a year-round program aimed at helping drivers understand the simple steps they can take to ensure that their tires are in good working condition. During National Tire Safety Week, tire makers and retailers across the country will work to educate the public about proper tire care and maintenance.

US small businesses notch year-on-year increase in borrowing

U.S. small businesses borrowed more money in January than they did a year earlier, signaling continued growth in the economy despite a spate of cold weather that has been blamed for weakness in many other indicators of activity. The Thomson Reuters/PayNet Small Business Lending Index, which measures the volume of financing to small companies, rose to 117.2 in January, up 4 percent from a year earlier. A rise in the index is historically correlated with stronger U.S. economic growth a quarter or two in the future.

Another tire aging report, another scathing attack

Tire aging is an easy attention grabber for local television news stations, especially during sweeps month. ABC affiliate Channel 5 in Cleveland, Ohio, ran a piece on Feb. 26 that followed true to similar reports ABC has been running across the country for years. The report sensationalized the issue. Modern Tire Dealer Editor Bob Ulrich wants to set the record straight — or at least straighter. In his latest blog, he explains some of the problems with taking the easy road.

Obama: Tax overhaul should fund transportation projects

President Barack Obama recently proposed a 4-year, $302 billion transportation bill, but warned that all road and bridge projects are in danger if Congress does not renew the Highway Trust Fund that expires in September. The proposed highway bill, however, would be half funded by a corporate tax overhaul that congressional leaders have already said is unlikely to pass this year.

Car manufacturers phase out spare tires

Open any trunk on many late model cars offered today and chances are you'll be surprised to discover there's no spare tire. There may be a spot for the spare to fit in the trunk, but more and more automakers have gotten rid of the spare. Automotive experts at Edmunds.com estimate a third of new cars do not have a spare because they've been focusing on something else.
