Texas inspection bill has 5-year exemption
Modern Tire Dealer
Recently, Sen. Carlos Uresti introduced Senate Bill 888 in Texas, legislation making extensive changes to the current state inspection and maintenance program for vehicles. Under the existing state inspection and maintenance program, vehicles are inspected every year. The bill includes provisions requiring that the state inspection and maintenance program must apply to gasoline-powered vehicles between five and 25 years old. This would change the initial inspection from two to five years for passenger cars sold in the state and not previously registered in Texas or another state. If this bill becomes law, it will take effect in September 2013.

2013 Marketplace Fairness Act would require online sales tax
Tire Review
According to the latest version of the Marketplace Fairness Act, introduced Feb. 14, online sales would be taxed at the same rates those items are taxed in stores. The proposed federal law aims to close the loophole that lets online sellers like Amazon.com avoid charging sales tax in states where they don't have any physical stores or warehouses.

Design a business card that gets noticed
Entrepreneur
A good business card should convey the overall image of your business — not easy, considering the card measures only 2 inches by 3 inches. How can you possibly get a message across in such a small amount of space? You can't expect your business card to tell the whole story about your company. What you should expect it to do is present a professional image people will remember.

Green Matter: Are tires becoming an environmental statement?
Plastics Today
Tires may seem to be an unlikely eco-product. But guess again — according to a new market report from Smithers Rapra, the global market for "green tires" will reach $70.6 billion by 2017, up from $44.8 billion in 2012 (28 percent of the total tire market). So what is a green tire? It's a tire that is optimized for low rolling resistance and/or in which renewably-sourced materials, especially elastomers, have been used to manufacture it. Currently, the largest sector of the green tire market is for low rolling resistance tires, which the Smithers Rapra report refers to as "energy tires."

Subaru recall for remote starter problem
Tire Business
A problem with remote starters on some of its cars and crossover vehicles has prompted a recall by Subaru of America Inc. According to reports by Reuters and other news sources, the auto maker is recalling up to 47,419 cars and crossovers in the U.S. equipped with remote starters because the engines could start on their own. If the remote starter key fob is dropped, according to the documents, it may start the engine without the ignition button on the fob being pressed. The engine may start and run for up to 15 minutes, and may continue to start and stop until the fob battery is depleted or until the vehicle runs out of gas. If the vehicle is parked in an enclosed area, such as a garage, Reuters said the NHTSA documents cited a risk of asphyxiation from a build-up of carbon monoxide.

Are airless tires the way of the future?
TruckingInfo
VideoBriefImagine a hybrid tire that can change tread patterns to suit the application, from a deep-block lug for traction to a smooth rib for fuel efficiency, or a tire that runs just on its shoulders for optimum fuel efficiency or on a full tread face for better traction. How about a tire/wheel assembly that leans into a turn for better traction and stability? Or an electromagnetic suspension that is actually part of the tire and wheel assembly rather than part of the vehicle? Those are some futuristic tire designs showcased by Hankook in a YouTube video they published last November.

Tire monitoring system expanding to waste industry
Waste & Recycling News
Flat tires. Slow leaks. Uneven wear. Unchecked tread depth. For fleet-based companies, nothing hits the brakes on their ability to deliver service quite like problematic and derailing tire issues. An advanced technology gaining traction in the auto, truck and bus market might be just the solution for one of the waste industry's top three costs of doing business, said Jeff Probst, who represents German-based manufacturer Ventech and markets its PNEUSCAN technology in North America. "The waste industry is toughest on tires," said Probst.
