EPA and state partners help border area manage scrap tires
U.S. Environmental Protection Agency via Environmental Expert
Recently, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, along with the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality and the State of Texas Alliance for Recycling, held a workshop in El Paso to help turn a source of pollution into a resource. Each year, the U.S.-Mexico border region deals with millions of discarded tires, which pile up and attract pests. Finding ways to manage these scrap tires is an important goal of EPA's Border 2020 U.S.-Mexico environmental program. Over the past few years, the program has made good progress by engaging local residents in cleanup efforts. This included removing six million tires from a pile in Ciudad Juarez, Mexico, which were converted into fuel.

Techs: Embrace a pro career or get out
Tire Business
There are jobs and then there are careers. Diagnosing and repairing modern vehicles is a demanding career, not just a time-killing job. The sooner everyone in the automotive repair industry recognizes this, the better. Automotive repair persons must be "career technologists." This phrase depicts an employee who embraces and masters the common technology of the day. To be fair, a competent technician need not master modern technology in the sense of the chemical engineer who masters a manufacturing process. However, today's competent tech must know enough to — at the very least — cope with the complexities of today's cars and trucks. The modern tech copes the same way good ones always have coped: He or she uses the proper procedures and equipment to diagnose systems accurately the first time.

Why vehicle recalls hurt tire dealers
Modern Tire Dealer
When vehicle manufacturers announce major recalls, independent tire dealers should cringe. Why? Because those vehicles end up in car dealerships, giving savvy salesmen a chance to sell additional services. That includes selling vehicle owners new tires. Is there anything that can be done about it?

Automotive plastics lightweighting and environmental trend drivers
By Don Rosato
Auto-makers choose plastic parts for a multiplicity of performance features. Important characteristics include durability, chemical resistance, mechanical toughness, coloring and finishing ease, elasticity and light weight. These automotive advances are driving the use of higher-end plastics under the hood, as well as the development of new plastics and coatings in new under-the-hood environments. On a volume basis, more plastics than steel are now used in today's cars for a wide range of components. Overall, growth in automotive plastics use has progressed from a typical 60 pounds per vehicle in 1970 to more than 400 pounds today.

Tire shop like family, complete with 'Mom' and baked goods
The Tyler Telegraph
Virginia Billings still works at the tire company she started with her late husband 45 years ago. She handles all of the bookkeeping and secretarial duties for Billings Tire & Service Center, now owned by her son Jeff Billings. And at least three days a week, she takes the 12 employees, who all call her “Mom," baked goodies. She also brings employees cookies on their birthdays. Mrs. Billings and her late husband, M.R. Billings, started the tire company in 1969. The business is much more than a tire shop. It also does general maintenance and repair, oil changes, alignments and more.

Statement by American Honda regarding tire bead damage recall
Automotive World
Honda will voluntarily recall 9,817 model-year 2014 Civic LX vehicles in the United States to inspect the originally installed tires for a tear in the tire bead. If an original tire is found to have a torn bead, the tire will be replaced. During a supplier's assembly of the tires onto the wheels, the tires may have been pinched between the assembly equipment and the vehicle's steel wheel rims, creating a tear. A tear in the bead of the tire could result in rapid air loss in the tire, making the vehicle more difficult to maneuver and increasing the risk of a crash.

Build relationships of trust
LinkedIn
Trust is a core ingredient to build successful relationships, both personal and professional ones. It is a major leadership characteristic. However, you can't take it for granted. You need to work hard to earn trust and to keep it. Isaac Watts once said that "Learning to trust is one of life's most difficult tasks." If you're not seen as a trustworthy person you can neither form engaged relationships nor high performing teams. And without them you can't become a successful leader and manager.
