Texas Tire & Automotive EXPO Successful

IGNITE — Inspire and Innovate, the 2015 edition of the Texas Tire & Automotive EXPO, included two days highlighting premier education — industry innovations — business solutions — operational strategy and unparalleled hospitality. The event included exhibits displaying tire and auto repair "state of the art". "The discussions, education sessions and networking with all the successful business owners is really a great way to give my business a boost” according to Bill Sodolak, Riverside Tire and Auto in Sealy, Texas.

Survey: Tire dealerships slowly adopting Internet technology

Tire dealerships could be doing more to make the online experience better for customers, according to market intelligence service Tire Intelligence. The service conducted a survey of 150 U.S. tire dealerships — primarily independents with multiple locations — during the first quarter of 2015 to gauge tire dealerships' adoption of Internet technologies. The report, titled "2015 Adoption of Internet Technologies in Tire Dealers," focused on two areas of Internet technology: Web visibility and website to store conversions.

Automakers are supporting provisions in copyright law that could prohibit home mechanics and car enthusiasts from repairing and modifying their own vehicles. In comments filed with a federal agency that will determine whether tinkering with a car constitutes a copyright violation, OEMs and their main lobbying organization say cars have become too complex and dangerous for consumers and third parties to handle.

BMW recalls 91,800 Mini Coopers to fix air bag sensor

BMW is recalling 91,800 Mini Coopers in the United States to replace a defective sensor that may prevent the front passenger seat air bag from deploying in a crash, the German automaker said April 18. In documents posted on the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration website, BMW said the recall of certain model year 2005 to 2008 Mini Cooper and Mini Cooper S cars is expected to being on May 1.

Dealership employees, payrolls top prerecession levels

Dealerships added to their employee count for the fifth year in a row last year, causing the average store's payroll to rise sharply above its prerecession level. The average new-car dealership employed 64 people in 2014, up from 57 in 2013 and a steady 53 in 2005-08. That lifted the average dealership's payroll to $3.6 million in 2014, up 5.9 percent from 2013 and 38 percent from 2005.

Ford picks Mexico for $2.5 billion engine investment

Ford confirmed April 17 it plans to invest $2.5 billion to build new engines and transmissions in Mexico and will eventually hire an additional 3,800 workers in a move that underscores a movement of automotive investment south from Canada and the U.S.

Michelin buys into online tire retailer

Groupe Michelin has acquired a 40 percent stake in Allopneus SAS, a French internet tire retailer, for $64 million. Michelin's investment comes four months after Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co. announced it would sell tires directly to consumers on goodyear.com. Goodyear is in the midst of rolling out its online system. Based at Aix-en-Provence, Michelin says Allopneus sold some 3 million tires in France in 2014, is seeing growth, and today accounts for 7 percent of the French market.
