TIA urges fight against tire registration language in bill

The Tire Industry Association is urging members to contact relevant committee members in Congress and ask them to remove tire registration language from the Obama administration’s transportation funding bill, also known as the GROW America Act. TIA’s action is directed specifically at Section 4112, titled "Tire Registration by Independent Sellers," which appears on page 189 of the bill, according to TIA Executive Vice President Roy Littlefield in the May 11 issue of TIA’s Weekly Legislative Update.

US transportation secretary announces steps to speed up road safety innovation

U.S. Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx announced a series of steps to speed what are being called "life-saving technology innovations" to America’s highways at the Delphi Labs in Silicon Valley recently. Honda, Daihatsu add 5 million cars to Takata air bag recall

The global Takata air bag recall expanded by millions more vehicles for the second time in as many days recently, with Honda Motor Co. and Daihatsu calling back more inflators. The latest recalls affect some 4.89 million vehicles at Honda and about 260,000 at Daihatsu, the mini-vehicle subsidiary of Toyota Motor Corp. The safety campaigns came just a day after Toyota and Nissan Motor Co. announced a similar recall of more than 6.5 million cars globally.

FCA ordered to explain handling of 20 recalls at July hearing

The testy relationship between U.S. auto safety regulators and Fiat Chrysler Automobiles has boiled over, with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration saying May 18 it would haul the automaker before a public hearing to investigate its handling of 20 recalls. NHTSA will hold the hearing on July 2 to determine whether FCA has failed to come up with adequate fixes for defects and review the adequacy of the automaker’s recall notices in 20 recall campaigns since 2013 affecting more than 10 million vehicles, the U.S. Department of Transportation said recently.

Three tire manufacturers are named among the most reputable companies in the United States, according to the annual U.S. RepTrak 100 list released by Reputation Institute and published in Forbes. Michelin North America Inc., Bridgestone Americas Tires Operations LLC and Pirelli Tire North America Inc. all made the list. The U.S. RepTrak rankings measure the public’s perception of companies based on seven dimensions: innovation, leadership, governance, citizenship, workplace, performance and products/services.

Deadline kills Tesla direct sales bill in Texas House

A Texas House deadline has come and gone, killing many top-priority bills for both parties — among them one that would allow Tesla-backed direct car sales and another to regulate ride-hailing companies. Midnight May 14 was the last chance for House bills to win initial, full-chamber approval. Since any proposal can be tacked onto other bills as amendments, no measure is completely dead until the legislative session ends June 1. But even with such resurrections, actually becoming state law now gets far tougher.
