Crews comb devastation in Oklahoma; confirmed death toll lowered to 24
NBC News
Rescue teams combed through pulverized buildings and splintered homes early May 21 after one of the deadliest tornadoes in U.S. history blasted through the suburbs of Oklahoma City, killing at least 24 people. The confirmed death toll from the Oklahoma medical examiner was lowered from an earlier figure of 51, illustrating the confusion as day broke over the shattered city of Moore. It was not clear how many children were included in the revised death toll, and authorities cautioned the toll could change again. Entire blocks of Moore appeared as though they had been razed, and cars were mangled beyond recognition. At least 120 people were injured.

Note: Several tire store locations in Moore, Okla., were destroyed. TTDA is asking members to keep all those impacted by the tornado in our prayers. We also are encouraging those who would like to help to make financial donations to the American Red Cross and designate the donation for the Oklahoma Relief Fund.

House once again votes to repeal health care reform law
Tire Business
For the third time, the U.S. House of Representatives has voted to repeal the health care reform law, but it again looks highly unlikely that the Democrat-controlled Senate will follow suit. By a 229-195 margin, the House on May 16 approved the repeal measure, HR 45, introduced by Rep. Michele Bachmann, R-Minn. However, it is almost certain the measure will not become law. It is unlikely to be considered by the Senate, where Democrats are in the majority.

Survey finds Texas ranks among top 5 states for small business
Lubbock Avalanche-Journal
Texas ranked among the top five states for friendly environments for small business for the second year in a row, a national survey released earlier this month showed. The survey, conducted by Kansas City, Mo.-based Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation and job marketing website Thumbtack.com, polled small-business owners across the country, ranking Texas No. 3 for best employment and labor laws and No. 4 for best environmental rankings. "For the second year, Texas sets an excellent example of what small businesses want," Sander Daniels, co-founder of the website, said in a statement to A-J Media. "The state's straightforward regulations, low taxes and high-quality resources put entrepreneurs in a position to grow and succeed."

Del-Nat donates $1 for every used tire collected
Modern Tire Dealer
A volunteer team from Memphis-based Del-Nat Tire Corp. collected 832 used and discarded tires on Saturday, May 11. The company plans to "transform" the tires into living trees. For each tire collected, Del-Nat is donating $1 toward the purchase of trees. It has dubbed the clean-up program "Tires for Trees." "We feel this is a perfect way for Del-Nat to contribute to our community, helping to beautify our city, and combating a health hazard by eliminating places — inside discarded tires — where mosquitoes can breed," says President Jim Mayfield. "You could say we're completing the cycle, from delivering new tires to properly disposing the used ones."
