Who is competitor No. 1? Look in the mirror

Who is the competitor you respect the most, or, at the very least, follow more closely than any other? According to a recent Web poll on the topic, it's you. Or at least those who look like you. Close to 42 percent of you said fellow independent tire dealers were your fiercest competitors. Tire company-owned stores were second, followed by car dealerships.

Cloud computing grows among tire dealers

According to ASA Automotive Systems, more and more of its customers considering a new system or upgrade are opting for cloud-based business management software systems. Over the past two years, ASA said it has experienced a 94 percent increase in cloud-based users, with the total number of companies adopting ASA's cloud-based hosting services soon to reach the 100 mark, representing about 500 locations and nearly 2,000 users.

TIA releases Best Management Practice for environment

The Tire Industry Association's Environmental Advisory Committee has issued a new environmental Best Management Practice to help tire generators manage the flow of tires removed from service. The document, along with five other Best Management Practices for the tire retail industry, is available free for downloading from the TIA website.

Fuel group disappointed in Supreme Court decision

The American Fuel & Petrochemical Manufacturers said it was disappointed that the U.S. Supreme Court declined to hear its appeal of an "E15" case. In August 2012, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit rejected the association's challenge to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's approval of the sale of gasoline containing 15 percent or more ethanol.

NHTSA: Hot, underinflated tires are dangerous

When the asphalt heats up, so do your tires, and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is warning motorists that a temperature spike combined with underinflated tires is a dangerous recipe. According to the agency, tire failure causes around 11,000 crashes every year.
