Dealers wait, weigh in, on tariffs

But dealers also are weighing in — by posting comments on tariff stories. And in many instances, the dealers aren’t holding back.

Google begins testing self-driving vehicles in Austin

Google Inc. has begun testing its self-driving vehicles in Austin, Texas, expanding efforts to gather information on how the prototypes interact with traffic, road conditions and people, the company said recently. Google has been testing self-driving prototypes since 2009, mainly around its Silicon Valley headquarters in Mountain View, California.

US will punish Fiat Chrysler over recall failures

The chief U.S. government official in charge of auto safety said July 2 that he will punish Fiat Chrysler Automobiles after regulators accused the automaker of flubbing recall fixes and repeatedly failing to notify the U.S. government and vehicle owners about defects. The automaker, which controls the Auburn Hills, Michigan-based car company previously called Chrysler Group, is under scrutiny for its handling of 23 recalls involving about 11 million vehicles.

No matter where you look around the world, governments are cracking down on vehicle emissions and aiming for higher fuel economy standards. Generally, automakers are pushing back against the increased regulation, and in the U.S., General Motors, Ford, and FCA US are looking for new compromises. The Big Three want to the EPA to grant them retroactive emissions credits for using tech that they claim reduces CO2 but not on the government agency's on-road testing.

Truckinginfo senior editor Tom Berg writes, "Some years ago I stood on a truckstop's lot and watched a hot-headed driver, who seemed to be looking for something, do two U-turns with his rig. His tractor pulled a loaded flatbed trailer with a wide-spread tandem, and I cringed as I watched the tires skid sideways and hop along the pavement. The high lateral forces in such moronic maneuvers have been known to tear up treads, pull tire beads away from rims and even break wheels. Turns out it could’ve been worse."
