Same data, different conclusions for ITC commissioners

There often are times in life when two groups of people can look at the same data and information and arrive at an opposite conclusion. That is the case with the six commissioners of the U.S. International Trade Commission, who decided the question of whether there would be countervailing and anti-dumping duties imposed on imports of passenger and light truck tires from China.

Test the alternatives as wheel weight markets shift away from lead

Tire dealers in Minnesota, the latest state to ban lead wheel weights, have about five months to find non-lead alternatives. Minnesota’s wheel weight law goes into effect on Jan. 1, 2016. In addition to Minnesota, lead wheel weights are illegal in California, Illinois, Maine, New York, Vermont and Washington. Two states and one country are now considering wheel weight regulations.

AutoNation grounds vehicles under recall

AutoNation Inc. will no longer sell any vehicle, used or new, with an open safety recall. The new policy will be costly, AutoNation CEO Mike Jackson says, but it's the right thing to do for customers. Jackson declined to estimate the expense but noted that 5 to 10 percent of AutoNation's inventory would be deemed unsellable at any given time under the new policy.

The Tire Industry Association and the Tire Retread & Repair Information Bureau will co-host the Global Retread Symposium at the 2015 Global Tire Expo in Las Vegas. The Global Tire Expo is part of the Specialty Equipment Market Association Show, which will run from Nov. 3-6.

US auto sales stronger than expected in August on trucks, SUVs

The U.S. auto industry powered ahead in August, topping sales estimates and shrugging off gyrating stock markets as consumers continued to show their penchant for pickup trucks and SUVs. U.S. auto sales were the strongest in any month since July 2005. The annualized selling rate in August was 17.8 million vehicles, according to Autodata Corp, well above expectations of 17.3 million.

TIA ag tire safety training offered to ATG dealers

Alliance Tire Americas will provide safety training to its farm tire dealers with the Tire Industry Association Basic Farm Tire Service program. Alliance will offer free training kits valued at $295 to new dealers and distributors who sell Alliance, Galaxy or Primex farm tires, said Bruce Besancon, ATA’s vice president of marketing Bruce Besancon. Alliance has already given kits to more than two-dozen dealers.

Fiat Chrysler recalls more cars to thwart hackers

Fiat Chrysler Automobiles has ordered the second recall in two months in order to install software that protects against computer hackers. The recall ordered Sept. 4 will update software in about 7,810 of its new 2015 Jeep Renegade that have 6.5-inch touchscreens. Since the Renegade is a new model, about half the affected vehicles are still in the hands of dealers.

Laser breakthrough could speed the rise of self-driving cars

The eyes of a self-driving car are called LIDAR sensors. LIDAR is a portmanteau of "light" and "radar." In essence, these sensors monitor their surroundings by shining a light on an object and measuring the time needed for it to bounce back. They work well enough, but they aren’t without their drawbacks. Today’s self-driving cars typically use LIDARs that are quite large and expensive. Google, for instance, used $80,000 LIDARs with its early designs.
