Tire makers' infrastructure spending down, but still huge
Rubber News
Tire makers worldwide budgeted more than $8 billion in capital expenditures in the past year toward new and expanded capacities. The figure is down from the record $10 billion in 2011-2012, but still the fourth largest 12 month total in more than 20 years. Add in Apollo Tyres Ltd.'s $2.5 billion bid to acquire Cooper Tire & Rubber Co., the amount would be a record of more than $10.5 billion. Michelin and Hankook Tire Co. Inc. top the list of spenders this year, each committing more than $1.5 billion toward capacity expansions and improvements, followed closely by Bridgestone Corp. with $1.1 billion.

5 reasons every employer needs an employee handbook
By D. Albert Brannen
The days of believing that a handbook can cause more harm than good are long gone. In today's business environment, a handbook serves both as a sword to carve out your legal rights, as well as a shield to protect them. A handbook sets expectations, encourages employees to behave in certain ways, helps ensure employees are treated consistently, publicizes employee benefits and helps win unemployment claims and lawsuits. These are just a few of the reasons why every employer, regardless of the number of employees, should have one.

2 Toyota recalls announced for 235,000 cars and SUVs
Los Angeles Times
Toyota recently announced it was voluntarily recalling about 235,000 vehicles for two separate issues. The first recall affects the Toyota Highlander Hybrid for 2006-10 and the Lexus RX400h hybrid for 2006-2010. Toyota said a component of the hybrid system can overheat, causing several warning lights to turn on, and the vehicle to enter "limp home mode" with the hybrid system powering down. The second recall is for the 2006-11 Lexus IS350 sedan and convertible and the Lexus GS350. The cars use the same 3.5-liter V-6 engine, and Toyota says a bolt within the engine's variable valve timing system can come loose. This can cause an affected car to stop running.

Recycle Akron showcases rubberized asphalt
Rubber News
Liberty Tire Recycling L.L.C. and Bridgestone Americas Inc. showcased the benefits of rubberized asphalt during Recycle Akron: 2013 at Bridgestone's Akron facility on Aug. 22. The program is part of the companies' joint effort to educate states on the benefits of adopting asphalt using recycled tires. "What we found is that rubber, when you use it as a modifier specifically replacing the polymer, it can produce a road that requires less maintenance, is more durable, quiet, has better drainage and has a cost savings," said Liberty President Dick Gust. "It wasn't always that way. Technology in rubberized asphalt has changed dramatically over the last 15 years. One of the things that has helped is that the price of oil is now very expensive."
