Clad wheels: Handle with extreme care
Modern Tire Dealer
Clad wheels require extreme care during mounting and balancing. Without it, a dealer will pay the ultimate price: replacing the wheel. Some dealers are acutely aware of the latest market trend affecting mounting and balancing. "We see a lot of them," says Jim Ramsey, CEO and president of Lamb Ventures LP, which does business as Lamb’s Tire & Automotive. "It looks like a nice chrome wheel but it’s plastic. If you’re not careful, you’ll break it. There’s no repairing it; you have to get another wheel."

Distracted driving
Modern Tire Dealer
It shouldn’t take an accident followed by an expensive trial to convince businesses to implement effective policies on distracted driving. And, even if the company has a policy, it also shouldn’t take a distracted driving case to make the business enforce it. Attorneys specializing in personal injury and employment at the law firm of Lewitt, Hackman, Shapiro, Marshall & Harlan in Encino, California, cite that all too often employers wish they had implemented a policy after an accident occurs.

Parameters of success have changed for tire-makers
Rubber & Plastics News
There definitely are different ways of measuring success these days in the global tire industry. Years ago, it was a big deal to be crowned as the No. 1 tire-maker in the world based on sales totals. You had the "Big 3" of Bridgestone, Michelin and Goodyear battling it out for the top spot, and there really was drama from year to year on who would come out on top. But being the biggest doesn't seem to be, well, that big of a deal anymore.

US orders VW to recall 482,000 cars for tricking emissions tests
NBC News
The Obama administration ordered Volkswagen to recall nearly 500,000 diesel-powered vehicles Sept. 18, accusing the car-maker of tricking emissions tests. The Environmental Protection Agency said the company equipped its cars with software, called a "defeat device," designed to detect when they were undergoing emissions testing. During that time, the device turned on full emissions control systems. After the test was over, the controls were turned off, allowing the cars to pollute up to 40 times the allowable levels.

Automotive News
Hours after General Motors agreed to pay $900 million to settle criminal charges related to a bungled recall, Chief Executive Mary Barra said the legal and public relations crisis that has shadowed her for nearly two years was "a catalyst for meaningful change." Now, Barra must show investors and consumers that the change at the No. 1 U.S. automaker is real, and goes beyond the steps she ordered to attack the engineering and managerial lapses that resulted in GM waiting more than a decade to fix dangerous vehicle defects now linked to 124 deaths.
