Lawmakers spar over auto safety fixes

Lawmakers in the House sparred on Sept. 25 over a set of competing proposals to improve the federal government's oversight of the U.S. auto industry after a series of recalls involving defective car parts. Republicans offered a pair of bills in a House hearing that are intended to address concerns that have been raised by a series of auto recalls that have occurred recently at companies such as General Motors and auto manufacturer Takata.

NHTSA proposes new procedures for assessing civil penalties

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is proposing new procedures for assessing civil penalties against tire, auto and auto parts-makers found in violation of federal safety regulations. NHTSA also wants to establish new guidelines for interpreting the factors in determining the amount of a civil penalty or compromise decision, according to a notice published Sept. 21 in the Federal Register.

EPA message to automakers: You're on notice

With top administrator Gina McCarthy speaking about the "moral obligation for climate action" on Sept. 25, the Environmental Protection Agency announced it would ramp up its oversight of the auto industry in the wake of Volkswagen's emissions cheating. In a letter sent to manufacturers, the agency said it would begin examining cars to see whether they contained defeat devices "in addition to the standard emissions test cycles."

Hyundai recalls 470,000 US Sonatas to fix engine debris defect

Hyundai is recalling and replacing the engines in nearly a half-million Sonata sedans in the U.S. because of a manufacturing defect that could cause them to stall. The recall covers 470,000 vehicles made between Dec. 11, 2009, and April 12, 2012, at the company's Alabama assembly plant equipped with 2-liter or 2.4-liter gasoline engines.

The Aftermarket Auto Parts Alliance focused on the changing aftermarket at its annual Sales & Marketing Forum Sept. 17-19, at the Plaza Marriott in San Antonio. More than 60 marketing leaders representing more than 35 Alliance shareholders from the U.S., Canada and Mexico attended the event. The main session featured presentations on the Alliance’s "Service is the Difference" program and the Aftermarket Jackpot 2015 Convention, which is scheduled to coincide with the Aftermarket Industry Week in Las Vegas this November.
