Texas small businesses add jobs in September — the largest gain since May

Small businesses in Texas added jobs in September — the largest gain since May and much higher than the national average, according to estimates released today by Intuit Inc. Employment at Texas small businesses — those with fewer than 20 employees — grew by 0.08 percent last month, up from a gain of 0.05 percent in August. Nationally, jobs were flat and hourly compensation, hours worked and average revenue all declined.

Employers turning to high-deductible health plans

Nearly half of small and midsize employers will include a high-deductible health plan among their group health benefit options by 2015. That's according to a survey by Itasca-based Arthur J. Gallagher & Co., a global insurance brokerage and risk management services firm. Among employers not currently offering coverage through an HDHP — also known as a consumer-driven health plan — nearly 23 percent said they plan to do so by next year, according to an executive summary of the survey released Oct. 3.

EPA power plant emissions proposal draws heat

Business and manufacturing interests faced off against environmentalists and consumer advocates over the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's proposed rule to limit carbon emissions from new power plants.
