Michelin announces Tweel airless tire going into production in
South Carolina

Michelin has been showing off its idea of combining the wheel and tire into a single component as far back as 2005. Dubbed the Tweel, the novel design replaced standard pneumatic tires and metal wheels with deforming spokes around a hub. While uses of the Tweel are still limited, the tech is about to get a big upgrade in production, with Michelin opening a dedicated factory to build them in Piedmont, South Carolina, on Nov. 20.

GM ready to fix SUVs that can catch fire

For the owners of 189,000 General Motors SUVs, the days of parking them outside the garage for fear that they could catch fire will soon come to an end. The company, in documents posted Nov. 12 by U.S. safety regulators, said it will start notifying customers that they can take their SUVs to dealers, who will replace faulty power-window switches.

NTSB will hold symposium on tire safety

The National Transportation Safety Board has announced a symposium on passenger tire safety on Dec. 9-10 in Washington, D.C. The agency says the symposium will highlight the importance of tires to the overall safety of passenger vehicles, and gather facts and expert opinion to assist the agency in four ongoing tire disablement-related investigations.

Authorities searching for tire dumpers in Amarillo, Texas

Amarillo Crime Stoppers is asking for help in identifying the person or persons responsible for illegally dumping used tires in Carson County, Texas, the organization said in a news release Nov. 17. Amarillo Crime Stoppers, which handles cases throughout Potter, Randall and Carson counties, and the Carson County Sheriff’s Office are looking for the individuals responsible for dumping a large volume of old tires on private property and county land.

1st aluminum F-150 rolls off assembly line

Ford has built its first aluminum-body 2015 F-150 pickup truck, and production of the vehicle is now underway at the 100-year-old Ford Rouge Center in Dearborn, Michigan, an event marked by the appearance of Bill Ford and other dignitaries. Ford plans to deliver the 2015 F-150 to dealers in December in the U.S. It will go on sale in 90 global markets in 2015. Fleets with special orders will get their trucks in February.
