DOE: Most drivers don't check tire pressure properly

The Department of Energy recently stated that 85 percent of drivers don't know how to properly check their tire pressure. The energy department concluded that only 17 percent of cars have all four tires at the proper pressure and that keeping tires properly inflated improves gas mileage by up to 3.3 percent.

Automaker group says E15 ethanol damages cars, EPA approval was rushed

Automakers have fired the latest salvo in the ongoing battle against ethanol blends in gasoline, saying it can damage engine components. That's despite several manufacturers approving it for use in their newest vehicles — adding to the confusion over ethanol in pump gasoline.

Hankook recalling nearly 1,500 tires

Hankook Tire is recalling nearly 1,500 tires that may develop a separation at the tread/belt edge. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says the problem could result in tire failure and loss of vehicle control, increasing the risk of a crash. The recall includes Dynapro MT LT325/60R18 RT03 tires manufactured Aug. 22, 2011, through Sept. 22, 2013.

Bill to repeal health reform law reinsurance fee introduced in House

A stiff fee created by the health care reform law that is paid by self-funded employers and other health care plans sponsors and will be used to partially reimburse commercial insurers covering individuals with high health costs would be repealed under bipartisan legislation introduced in the House of Representatives on Nov. 14.

US rubber trade deficit hits $1 billion in April

The rubber product trade deficit topped out at just more than $1 billion for April, 4.8 percent higher than a year earlier, according to U.S. Commerce Department data. Tires and related products accounted for more than 80 percent of the April deficit, with imports outpacing exports by $814.4 billion on the month. That shortfall was 10.2 percent higher than April 2012, though the tire sector's shortfall for the first four months of 2013 decreased 3 percent to $2.81 billion.

OSHA proposes new rule to improve tracking of workplace injuries

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration recently issued a proposed rule to improve workplace safety and health through improved tracking of workplace injuries and illnesses. The announcement follows the Bureau of Labor Statistics' release of its annual Occupational Injuries and Illnesses report, which estimates that three million workers were injured on the job in 2012.

IRS to take a closer look at small business filings

Speaking at the American Institute of CPAs, IRS Small Business/Self-Employed division head Faris Fink said the agency will be shifting its auditing focus from corporations to small-business partnerships, which have grown significantly in number over the last six years. From 2007 to 2011, the increase was more than 15 percent, according to the IRS.
