Nearly 12 percent of motorists drive on bald tires

Nearly 12 percent of U.S. motorists drive on at least one bald tire, according to a new survey conducted by the Rubber Manufacturers Association. The RMA’s 2014 Tread Depth Survey sampled more than 3,400 American drivers regarding the tread depth on their tires, the association said.

US auto regulator seeks nationwide recall of Takata air bags

The U.S. auto safety regulator has told Japanese supplier Takata Corp. and five automakers to expand nationwide a regional recall of potentially lethal air bags, increasing pressure on the industry to move faster in a growing scandal. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration also scolded Takata for what it called "an unwillingness to move forward" on a nationwide recall, and said the company needs to be open with the U.S. public about the risks of its air bags.

New car sales to rise to 16.9 million in 2015

The National Automobile Dealers Association forecasts that 16.94 million new cars and light trucks will be purchased or leased in the U.S. in 2015. "Rising employment and wages, continued low interest rates and lower gasoline prices all signal an increase in new light-vehicle sales in 2015," NADA Chief Economist Steven Szakaly said at a press briefing ahead of the NADA/J.D. Power Western Automotive Conference in Los Angeles.

41 million travelers to hit road for Thanksgiving

AAA Travel reports nearly 46.3 million Americans will journey 50 miles or more from home during the Thanksgiving weekend, the highest number for the holiday season since 2007. This is a 4.2 percent jump from last year. Almost 90 percent of travelers will celebrate the holiday with a road trip and will enjoy the lowest gas prices in nearly four years. The busiest time for travel this Thanksgiving Nov. 26 through Nov. 30.

Bridgestone opening South Carolina radial OTR tire plant

Bridgestone Americas Inc. is celebrating its expanded capabilities in Graniteville, South Carolina, with the opening of its $1 billion-plus radial OTR tire plant and an ongoing capacity increase to its existing passenger tire facility, both located in Aiken County. "I'm really excited," said Ron Brooks, manager of the radial OTR plant. "It's a brand new facility on 550 acres. It's a U.S.-certified wildlife habitat area and the campus is absolutely beautiful. Any time you're involved in a new start-up, the people are energetic and it's exciting to be around them."
