By-wire age is coming — what's missing is trust

Gingerly, the auto industry is stepping up the push for car features that work by electronic impulses instead of metal pumps, pinions and cylinders. The motivation is clear: Vehicle technologies lumped together as "X-by-wire" — brake-by-wire, steer-by-wire, drive-by-wire — promise to make cars lighter, safer, easier to build and more fuel efficient. But selling that point has been tough.

US sales of cars, light trucks increase 9 percent in November

U.S. sales of cars and light trucks surged 9 percent in November to 1.24 million units and rolled off dealership lots at the fastest pace in almost seven years. The industry's annualized sales rate, adjusted for seasonal factors, rose to 16.4 million last month, up from 15.3 million a year earlier and easily topping analysts' forecasts in the 15.8 million range.

Bridgestone shows 2nd generation airless tire

Bridgestone Corp. has revealed its second generation air-free concept tire. The manufacturer said the new model features improved load-bearing capabilities, environmental design and driving performance. The tire is "one step closer to a viable, commercially available air-free tire," Bridgestone stated.

Hyundai, BMW, McLaren, Dodge and Mercedes-Benz issue recalls
The New York Times
Hyundai will recall about 15,500 Entourage minivans from the 2007-2008 model years for a corrosion-related steering problem, according to a report the automaker posted on the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration website. Other, smaller recalls were issued by BMW, McLaren, Dodge and Mercedes-Benz for an assortment of safety problems.

Brother, can you spare a spare?

When it comes to equipping vehicles with tires intended for emergency use, an increasing number of carmakers are saying no. Instead, they're fitting ever more vehicles with run-flat tires or tire inflator kits. AAA, an authority on automotive data, says hundreds of car models from more than a dozen manufacturers no longer offer spare tires — not even the temporary "donut" types that have mostly replaced full-size ones. The association estimates that 1 in 7 new cars bought today have no spare.
