Tire labeling beginning to have effect

There are already signs that European tire labeling is having an effect on the purchasing decisions of consumers, that's the view of Continental representatives shared at the company at its recent annual trends briefing in London. Conti's reading of market response to labeling follows a number of different view proffered by other manufacturer, supplier and retail sources. So far much of the data has suggested that the label is unused or unoffered and so therefore doesn't have much influence.

Car repair shops expect to be busy for months

Thanks to the ice storm, auto repair shops expect to be busy for months. As the ice is starting to melt from North Texas roads, repair shops are just now starting to fix all the cars damaged during the storm. AAA responded to more than 4,000 calls from Friday, Dec. 6, to Monday, Dec.9. Most calls ranged from drivers being stuck on ice, stalled vehicles and dead batteries.

EPA: 2012 models' fuel economy a record

Higher sales of vehicles with smaller engines, gasoline-electric hybrids and diesel powertrains helped boost the average fuel economy of 2012 new vehicles sold in the U.S. 1.2 mpg to 23.6 mpg. That's an all-time high, according to the Trends Report issued Dec. 12 by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. The 1.2 mpg gain from 2011 models is the second-largest year-over-year gain in the past 30 years, the EPA said.

Michelin recalls 1.2 million tires in US
Automotive News
Michelin North America is recalling 1.2 million tires in the United States — including some used as original equipment on some of Ford Motor Co.'s full-sized vans — because the tread might come apart. Michelin said it had detected a "tread/belt endurance" problem through warranty claims and 20 claims from consumers seeking reimbursement for damage to their vehicles. There have been no reports of injuries, the company said.

Survey shows TPMS crucial to fuel efficiency

A recent survey undertaken by Fusion Research reported that 51 percent of fleets questioned had improved their fuel efficiency in 2013 over previous years. The study was part of the Texaco Truck Research Report, supported by Chevron Lubricants and Continental Tyres, and was presented during the latter's media briefing last week. As part of the research of more than 500 operators across the United Kingdom, respondents were asked specifically how they felt tires and tire pressure monitoring systems affected their fuel efficiency.
