New oil change invoice requirements for shops
Tire Review
From Oct. 23: Your customer invoices might have to list the engine oil type, brand and other related information, according to a new recommendation by the U.S. Commerce Department's National Institute of Standards and Technology and the National Conference of Weights and Measures. These recommendations became effective July 1 for states that approve, and are outlined in a section known as the Uniform Regulation for the Method of Sale of Commodities. But, it is still not clear how these recommendations will be enforced.

Will selling used tires become illegal?!
Modern Tire Dealer
From April 3: According to the Rubber Manufacturers Association, an estimated 20-25 million used tires enter the domestic market each year. How many of them are re-sold? The RMA wants to limit that; as a result, it is supporting Texas legislation that will, in essence, make selling an "unsafe" tire in Texas a punishable offense. TTDA opposses this legislation, and believes that there are current rules and regulations that handle the illegal dumping of used tires if the rules were properly enforced. An installer's guide to wheel offset
Modern Tire Dealer
From April 24: One of the most common modifications your customers make to their cars is to replace the wheels. It's easy to see why — there is really no faster, more effective way to customize a car's look or feel than by changing the wheels. Whether your customers are upsizing to 18-inch high-performance wheels for a "sporty" look and feel, going all out with those 20-inch or larger "bling" wheels, or downsizing to smaller wheels for a set of snow tires, there are three factors that consumers and service professionals must take into account when choosing and installing a different size of wheel.

Financial analysis 101
Modern Tire Dealer
From June 19: Tire and service shop owners are busy folks. And, even if they had the time, our industry is not known for having dealers take the time to review their monthly financial statements on a regular basis. I believe this holds dealers back from achieving their true potential of “improving their bottom line profits.” After looking at hundreds of monthly profit and loss statements, as well as gathering industry data from the financial community, here are some stats that should interest us.

Yet another competitor arises
Tire Business
From Oct. 23: In the not so distant past the arch nemesis of small independent tire dealerships was the so-called "big box" store segment — including retailers such as Sears, Costco and Wal-Mart. Today, after the most recent recession that throttled the auto industry and shrank the car makers' franchise networks, auto dealerships are looking for every opportunity to recapture lost sales. That means taking a bigger bite out of the tire and auto maintenance aftermarket.
