Sustainability and the supply chain: How to reduce cost and save the environment
    Manufacturing Business Technology
For years now, the "green" and "sustainable" trends have transitioned to a standard. From corporate offices to high-rise apartments and clothing manufacturers, most industries have begun to seriously invest in sustainability. The modern consumer is more sustainability-savvy, and brands are beginning to realize that purchasing power is often directed towards businesses that are up to par on remaining socially responsible. As customers become increasingly aware of the conditions in which the products they buy are made and transported, organizations should pay closer attention to transforming their own supply chains for a greener good.

Store: Order selector training is an investment, not a cost
    Material Handling & Logistics
Today's distribution center managers try to increase productivity any way they can. Most tend to invest in new technologies and equipment, sales efficiencies, delivery route optimization, inventory management and procurement changes. But in an environment that still largely is driven by a labor-intensive task (order selection), why do we continuously ignore the simplest and most cost-effective investment opportunity: the efficient work habits of our people?

Warehousing's forgotten maintenance: Forklift lead-acid battery
    By Neil Swanson
As facility managers, we understand the importance of budgeting, productivity and inventory levels, as well as the general daily grind of running facilities. Yet how many of us truly maintain one of our largest capital expenditures — the forklift battery? As a lead-acid battery is used, water evaporates and needs to be replaced regularly. Neglecting to replace the water will shorten battery life, affect forklift motor brushes and void warranties. Without proper battery maintenance, warehousing and logistics come to a standstill.

    Chain of Thought
Tom Andel writes, "Feeling the effects of the 'sequester' yet? Me either. And according to economic indicators, neither is the consumer. It looks like they'll be using their smartphones and their Twitter and Facebook accounts to continue consuming well into 2013. As retailers gear up to satisfy new streams of demand from these channels, logistics software vendors have a big opportunity to capitalize on this trend, according to a new 'Retail SourceIT Report' from Technology Business Research."

You don't have a Big Data problem; you have hundreds of little data problems
Many manufacturing and distribution companies are wrestling with the enormous challenge of Big Data, trying to turn mountains of data into actionable information. And while some companies curse the landslide of data overwhelming their organizations, others look to capitalize on what they realize is an opportunity to better understand their customers, suppliers and costs. But the challenge is more nuanced than sculpting a huge collection of unwieldy data.

    RFID Journal

Management met with biomedical, nursing and transportation employees, and found that tracking assets was a major priority. The hospital, however, also wanted infrastructure in place that would enable it to track personnel and patients, as well as hand-hygiene practices, in the future.
