WERC/DC Velocity study: Economic recovery hasn't derailed DC performance
DC Velocity    Share   Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
The faint rumbling sound coming from the nation's warehouses and distribution centers is no cause for alarm. Quite the opposite, in fact. If the results of our annual survey on DC performance are any indication, the rumblings you've been hearing are the sound of economic recovery — or to be precise, the sound of DCs throttling up their order fulfillment operations as sales began to pick up. While there's always the risk that a ramp-up in volume will send performance into a tailspin, it appears that most DCs avoided that trap last year. Our eighth annual survey of key warehousing and DC metrics showed that most operations made slow but steady gains in performance. Launched in 2004, the annual study tracks the metrics DC professionals are using to monitor their operations as well as changes and trends in overall performance against those metrics from year to year. Cargo insurance mandate to end March 21
DC Velocity    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Barring last-minute congressional intervention, starting March 21 virtually all of the nation's truckers will no longer be required to carry cargo liability insurance. A final rule from the U.S. Department of Transportation's Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration will make it no longer mandatory for motor carriers to carry even the minimum amount of coverage to insure the cargo they transport. The minimums are set at $5,000 per claim, up to a $10,000 aggregate limit for losses occurring at any one time or place. The rule, published last June, goes into effect March 21. Carriers have been required to carry government-mandated cargo liability coverage since 1935. More

Bob Trebilcock: Building the better aluminum pallet
Modern Materials Handling    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail
You've heard the old saw about a better mouse trap and the path to your door. Here's the materials handling version: build a better pallet, and industry will beat a path to your door. "Do you think that's true?" Young Lee asked me. I assured him I do. Lee is the executive director of AL Pallet USA. While the company has been in existence since 2002 in Korea, AL Pallet's aluminum pallet is a new entrant to the North American pallet market. To kick things off, AL Pallet is exhibiting at ProMat at booth 4547. Lee and his colleagues believe they have built the better mouse trap with a patented design that looks good and carries a relatively heavy load with a light pallet. More

Even sales people fear supply chain breakdowns
Material Handling & Logistics    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
It's a time-honored tradition that inventory managers sometimes stockpile extra supplies against the fear of parts or materials shortages, whether on the shop floor, in hospital storerooms or in MRO departments. But who would have thought even sales executives engage in the practice? According to a study by the Chief Marketing Officer Council, that's exactly what's happening. Lack of confidence in the marketing supply chain appears to be a major contributor to the hoarding of marketing materials by sales executives. Nearly 1 in 2 sales executives over-orders critical marketing support materials by as much as 25 percent per order. More

FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
While Congress continues to debate health care reform legislation, many employers have started emphasizing wellness as a way to cut health care costs. And a new survey from Principal Financial Group, conducted by Harris Interactive, indicates U.S. workers are embracing the idea. The number of workers using weight-loss programs their companies offered surged to 53 percent in 2010 — a 25 percent increase compared to the prior year, reports The Principal Financial Well-Being Index, which surveyed small and mid-size U.S. companies. In fact, weight-loss-related benefits were one of employees' most-wanted perks. More

RS232 serial port allows wireless export of data or wireless printing of individual or sequence weighing events.

Japan's broken chains
Material Flows    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
A logistics professional's biggest fear is the unknown. Unfortunately, logistics professionals connected to the disasters in Japan don't have the luxury of that fear any more. Survival demands that they act. They can't rely on past experience to guide their actions because nothing of this magnitude ever has happened to modern-day Japan. Recently, Prime Minister Naoto Kan told his nation as much, calling the earthquake and tsunami that devastated their country the biggest crisis Japan has faced since it emerged from World War II. Supply chain managers around the world now are feeling the effects. They have no choice but to find alternatives to their Japanese sources of products and services. More

Lisa Quast: The best ways to motivate people (and it isn't with money)
Forbes    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
It used to be thought that money was the best way to motivate employees. Bonuses were given to workers achieving their objectives, pay raises were given to employees with outstanding performance, and stock options were granted to overachievers. But when the difficult global economy took hold several years ago, many companies were forced to cut back on financial incentive programs or even put them on hold in order to stay financially viable. What can managers do to motivate employees when they have lost the previous ability to provide financial incentives? And what can employees do to motivate themselves? More

Vetting an LSP? Ask it to show you the money
DC Velocity    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
When companies go to choose a logistics service provider, they tend to give a lot of weight to factors like price, capabilities, experience, management depth, and so forth. What sometimes gets overlooked in the process is the LSP's financial health. Unfortunately, that's something a prospective client can't afford to skim over. While it might feel awkward to question a candidate about its financial stability, this is an essential part of the due diligence. For one thing, you want assurances that the provider will be around for the long term. For another, if you're signing a sizable contract (as is common today), it's important to ascertain that the LSP has adequate financial resources to provide the support and services you require. More
