3PL relationships: From arm's length to an embrace
Material Flows    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Tom Andel writes, "A new level of intimacy is becoming the new normal for many in logistics. Service providers are now service partners for manufacturers reaching out to global markets. I spoke with several 3PLs recently who explained how close they've gotten to some clients that, in the past, preferred a good arm's length between themselves and outsiders. Here's what those 3PLs told me." More

Capacity tightens as conditions get tougher for shippers
Material Handling & Logistics    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Although some sectors of the economy still are waiting for visible evidence of a recovery, shippers have all the proof they need in the tightening of trucking capacity. The Shippers Conditions Index for February 2012, compiled by transportation forecasting firm FTR Associates, dropped by a full point from the previous month to -5.6, as demand for trucking services grew strongly in what is normally a slack month. While Storage Solutions, Inc. does sell new equipment, we also specialize in providing customers with quality used pallet racking, along with other used material handling equipment. What doesn't motivate creativity can kill it
Harvard Business Review    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Management is widely viewed as a foe of innovation. The thinking goes that too much management strangles innovation (just let a thousand flowers bloom!). But we have found a much more nuanced picture. You really can manage for innovation, but it starts by knowing what drives creativity in the people who generate and develop the new ideas that, when implemented, will become tomorrow's innovations. Unfortunately, too many managers unintentionally kill innovation because they rely too heavily on carrots and sticks to motivate employees. More

The visible supply chain
Supply Chain Digest    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Almost like the search for the Holy Grail, the quest for greater visibility has similarly been driving supply chains across the globe for the past decade. One could argue that the supply chain visibility era started in the late 1990s, when Art Mesher, then an analyst at Gartner and now CEO of Descartes Systems, wrote a series of research notes on "The Three V's of Supply Chain," which were velocity, variability and visibility. From that point on, visibility has been at the forefront of supply chain issues, and improving the level of visibility has moved in the last seven to 10 years to the top of the corporate supply chain priority list for the majority of companies. Does the axiom 'If it's not broken, don't fix it' apply to distribution center operations?
Supply Chain Digest    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
If you are in charge of warehousing and distribution operations, sitting in the confines of your comfortable office you may feel confident that your operation is, with a few minor exceptions, running like the preverbal Swiss Watch. This opinion may be based on statistical reports, occasional interaction with employees, customer feedback, and general observations. However, down in the trenches (floor of the DC), the opinion may be very different fostering the perception that the DC is "a god forsaken, grueling place to work!" More

Wal-Mart has just released its sustainability report for 2012, mostly reporting progress along a seemingly endless range of initiatives. Wal-Mart starts by noting its three overarching goals that it set in 2005: to be supplied 100 percent by renewable energy; to produce zero waste, and to sell products that sustain health and the environment. There's no timetable for meeting these objectives, but they drive the company's effort and investment in sustainability. More
