Forklift operators often mum on unsafe conditions
Material Handling & Logistics    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Research carried out by Grahame Robb Associates Ltd., a U.K. based management consulting firm, in conjunction with the Fork Lift Truck Association of the U.K., suggests that around 75 percent of employees in the material handling sector believe there are "accidents waiting to happen" at work. FLTA chief executive, David Ellison, said: "The ugly secret behind most fork lift truck accidents is that someone is aware of the threat well in advance, but is either unwilling or feels unable to speak up." Green light for the automotive supply chain
Supply Chain Digital    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Over the past decade, automotive manufacturers have invested heavily in boosting their green credentials, from environmental research and development that has radically increased the fuel efficiency of vehicles to transforming in-bound supply chain efficiency and manufacturing. However, the globally tough economic climate has limited the automotive industry's ability to apply the same efficiency to the movement of goods from manufacturing site to retail dealerships. More

Benefits of sustainability go beyond the bottom line
Supply Management    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
In a presentation to the Sustainable Purchasing & Supply Summit in London, Carmel McQuaid, Marks & Spencer's climate change manager, told an audience of buyers that in addition to benefiting the bottom line — through reduced usage and efficiency savings — there were a number of less tangible, but very valuable improvements from sustainable procurement. WERC certification pays unexpected dividends
DC Velocity    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Though not yet 2 years old, the Warehousing Education and Research Council's facility certification program already has built a track record of providing benefits to the companies that take part. Participants say those benefits can come in at least two forms: improvement in operations in preparation for certification, and validation of existing capabilities and efficiencies by the certification itself. Using data to power the supply chain
EBN    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Check out any supply chain survey conducted within the past few years and the term "visibility" will rank at the top of the wish list. Suppliers, distributors and end-customers all want to track the movement of parts as they work their way toward becoming finished goods. But each of these partners needs different data at different points in the supply chain to fulfill their concept of visibility. As a result, this data resides in silos and isn't shared across the supply network. More

Automation: Sorting it out with Interroll
Modern Materials Handling    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
The idea that the world is flat has been a topic of business conversation since Tom Friedman's book appeared a few years ago. Friedman's thesis is that the proliferation of technology and communications means that we're all competing against one another, no matter where we live. Global events and global competition affect us at the local level. We're seeing that play out in the materials handling world in North America. More

Food spoilage is a rotten shame
Material Flows    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Tom Andel writes, "U.S. consumers are spoiled by all the choices their neighborhood grocery stores give them. Shamefully, too much produce is also spoiled before it even makes it to those stores. We don't see that spoilage because it happens further up the supply chain — mostly on the road. Food spoilage in global supply chains totals more than $35 billion a year, according to Forbes magazine. That news is hard to take considering all the people in this country who either can't afford or don't bother looking for nutritious, fresh food. Part of the problem is growers who can't afford or don't bother looking for answers as to why a lot of their products don't make it to their destinations with much shelf life left in them." More

Military logisticians find workaround to Pakistan route closings
DC Velocity    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Steve Geary writes, "We're always looking to shine a light on emerging stories in logistics, and that includes new developments in the military. We recently attended the National Defense Industrial Association's 28th Annual National Logistics Conference and Exhibition in Miami and found attendees there were very low-key about something that is pretty amazing — that is, the ability of the U.S. military's logistics organization to continue supporting personnel in Afghanistan even though its routing options for delivering supplies have been drastically reduced." You're not crazy — Those machines ARE talking
Material Flows    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Tom Andel writes, "Remember the factory of the Future everyone dreamed about in the '80s? In the U.S. it's still more of a dream than a reality. Ironically, some developing countries may be closer to seeing the realization of that dream than those who originally dreamed it. In this dream, a point-of-sale system is connected to a warehouse, which is connected to an on-demand manufacturing plant operating in a lean — not a batch — mode. So if an item gets purchased at a particular location you have the logistical and manufacturing infrastructure to produce that one item and its replacement." More
