Environmental Leader    Share   Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Last month, we started a discussion about supply chains with respect to environmental impacts related to the various actors in the chain. We'll continue here with an example. But, first, a story from the trenches. I've mentioned Interface Carpets before as an example of a company dedicated to green manufacturing and on a path to sustainable business practice. The recent AutomationWorld article, titled "Sustainability leads to next-generation manufacturing," gives some statistics on how Interface has done in the words of its founder and retired CEO Ray Anderson. Executives: Trucking took steps in recession to prepare for recovery
SupplyChainBrain    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
This recession required trucking companies to exhibit new levels of grit and business acuity. Lessons learned and changes implemented will have implications that stretch well into the next business cycle. If there were medals for surviving the Great Recession, they might well be inscribed with the famous Nietzsche quote: "That which does not kill us makes us stronger." More

US outlines plan to curb violations of labor law
The New York Times    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
In a move that will affect most American corporations, the Labor Department plans to require companies to prepare and adopt compliance plans aimed at ensuring they do not violate wage, job safety and equal employment laws. The effort, aimed in part at reducing the incidence of employers not paying overtime and improperly classifying workers as independent contractors, will require them to document many of their decisions and share that information with their workers and the government. Leadership is much more than position
Harvard Business Review via Bloomberg Businessweek    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Walk into any organization and ask people to name a leader and the most frequent response will be the name of the CEO. This conflation of "leader" with "person at the top of the hierarchy" has been reinforced by legions of academics with access to samples of people holding supervisory positions and claiming to be studying leadership. Estimates suggest that 84 percent of leadership research between 2003 and 2008 equated leaders with formal supervisors. More

High-speed rail is great, but what about freight?
SupplyChainBrain    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
If you've ever ridden the TGV between Paris and Lyon, you know what a pleasure it can be to zip along the rails at speeds of up to 200 miles per hour, more quickly and a lot less stressfully than traveling by air or passenger car. And you might have thought: Wouldn't it be great to have something like this in the U.S.? There's been talk of high-speed rail in this country for years, but real progress has been stymied by a lack of political will and the massive price tag. More

US carbon dioxide emissions fell record 7% last year
USA TODAY    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Energy-related carbon dioxide emissions fell a record 7 percent last year, partly because of the economic downturn, the U.S. government reported May 5. FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Product quality is the most important supply chain initiative for manufacturers and retailers in 2010, according to a recent survey conducted by analyst firm IDC. The survey results reflect the growing number of recalls in categories such as automotive, toys, and grocery and increasing pressure on brands from retail private label. Reducing costs, meanwhile, is the top supply chain priority for respondents, and there is significant interest in improving forecasting capability and accuracy as well as improving responsiveness to demand changes. Rethinking packaging
Big Think    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Product packaging is one of consumerism's most toxic byproducts -- transient, temporary and lacking the vaguely utilitarian excuse for existence that the product it contains can claim. It requires energy to make, adds to shipping weight and often is made of polymers that linger in landfills for thousands of years. Now, designers are turning to innovative materials and engineering to revolutionize the environmental impact of packaging. More

iPad's innovative design expected to revolutionize electronics supply chain
@Risk    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
There's no doubt about it: Apple Inc.'s iPad is unique. And its innovative user interface-focused design has analysts predicting a complete shake up of the global electronics supply chain. "Electronic products have always been designed the same way, with a motherboard-oriented approach starting with the circuits and semiconductors on a central printed circuit board and then wrapping UI-focused elements like the keyboard and display around it," says Derek Lidow, president and chief executive officer at iSuppli, in a press release.
