Complex vs. simple expiry modelling in supply chain planning
The 21st Century Supply Chain    Share   Share on
FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Expiry planning adds a whole new dimension to the supply chain planning and simulation process, but in those industries where expiry (or best before) is part of their manufacturing and distribution process (pharma, food, med devices among others), the ability to generate production plans that take into account expiry is absolutely vital to creating a realistic plan. Most ERP systems support expiry on some level, usually from a transactional point of view (what I will call simple expiry). More

The median salary for the 1,010 readers who responded to this year's poll was $85,000 -- down about 5 percent from the pre-recession peaks of $89,000 in the 2008 survey and $90,000 in 2007. But the news on the compensation front isn't all grim. More

US economy: Trade gap widens as growth rebounds
Bloomberg Businessweek    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
The trade deficit in the U.S. widened in March to the highest level in more than a year as imports climbed faster than exports, adding to evidence of the global recovery from the worst recession in the post-World War II era. A rebounding American consumer, combined with business spending on equipment and inventories, means imports may keep growing. Exports probably also will improve as expanding economies in Asia and Latin America, counter any drag from Europe as the debt crisis hurts the euro. More

Healthcare Packaging    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Broader use of compliance-prompting packaging in the U.S. has been elusive, often stalled by cost concerns. Yet health care reform potentially may prove to be the "tipping point" in negating cost as the key driver. How? As health care reform begins to take shape, "physicians, pharmacists and hospitals will make money by making people healthier and improving patient health outcomes," said Walter Berghahn, vice president of packaging technology for Amerisource Bergen Packaging Group. Human intelligence and machine stupidity: Supply chains are about effectiveness, not only efficiency
The 21st Century Supply Chain    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail
Before I start on the body of my blog posting, let me state unequivocally I believe, no, I know, that computers and software have a huge role to play in decision making and execution in a wide range of business functions. After all, I have worked in the software industry for the past 25 years. I am also not one of those wacky people who thinks that machines are going to take over the world. However, I am one of those people who believes that humans have unique skills that no machine currently is able to match, particularly the ability to evaluate nuance, uncertainty and risk. More

RFID Journal    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Researchers at the University of Arizona's School of Plant Sciences are preparing to commercialize a system that employs radio frequency identification and GPS technologies to enable farmers to determine the fertility of lettuce fields while also allowing retailers to trace lettuce back through the supply chain. The system includes RFID- and GPS-enabled harvest-aid machines that now are being used to track not only when and where lettuce was picked, and but also when it was moved into cold storage. More

Motivating Gen X, Gen Y workers
Entrepreneur    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Traditional approaches to motivating employees have hit a snag; they don't seem to apply to the contemporary generation of employees, called Generation X and Generation Y (or Millenials). Who are the Generation Xers? Most writers agree that these approximately 50 million people were born between the mid 1960s and 1980 -- the offspring of the famous baby boomers. Who are the Generation Yers or Millenials? The approximately 70 million Gen Yers came next, born in the mid- to late-1970s through the late-1990s. More
