Tom Andel writes, "Until the natural gas infrastructure becomes more widespread across the U.S., diesel fuel will continue to be a necessary evil. That seemed to be the conclusion of an article appearing in a recent Wall Street Journal article titled 'Will truckers ditch diesel?' It stated that today 3.2 million big rigs traveling U.S. roads burn 25 billion gallons of diesel annually and 7 million single-unit trucks like those used by FedEx and UPS consume another 10 billion gallons." 3PL selection Starbucks style
Material Flows    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Tom Andel writes, "Some supply chain professionals give about as much thought to choosing a third-party logistics service provider as they do to picking a Frappuccino. But even Chris Honsberger, director of distribution for Starbucks will tell you that choosing the wrong 3PL is a more effective way to stay awake at night than ingesting caffeine. And selecting the right one doesn't end when the contract is signed, he told colleagues attending a session on this topic at the annual conference of the Warehousing Education and Research Council held in Atlanta recently." But can they deliver?

When it comes to sourcing products, parts or materials, some companies choose their suppliers strictly on one basis: price. Given the current flat economy, that's probably no surprise. These companies are likely under enormous pressure to hold down supply chain operating expenses, and that starts with procurement. But for many other buyers, price is not the sole concern. "I would say in most cases, cost is a very important consideration, but it's not the only consideration in picking suppliers," says Kumar Venkataraman, a consultant with the firm A.T. Kearney. More

Harvard Business Review    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
It would be nice to think that you're going to be just as excited about going to work tomorrow as you were on your first day on the job. But between increased workloads caused by your company's reluctance to hire more people, or a change in management that has put less than stellar people in charge of your little corner of the universe, or maybe the fact that you have done the same job for a while now, you may be feeling well, not exactly burned out, but fatigued. The penitent's road map to reshoring
DC Velocity    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Well, the chickens are continuing to come home to roost. Or maybe in this 21st century of globalized supply chains, the Peking Ducks are coming home. (OK, we know it's "Beijing" today, but the menu at our favorite takeaway joint still says "Peking.") Many of the pioneers who boldly sent both product and component manufacturing off to China have moved onward and upward, pocketed handsome bonuses, and are apparently immune from prosecution. But the cost-slashing offshoring that has been a given for CFOs for decades now has been exposed as a risky bet, with more downsides than anyone imagined at the outset. More
