Wal-Mart is working with suppliers of men's jeans and basics (socks, undershirts and underwear) to be able to track these items using RFID tags based on EPCglobal's second-generation ultrahigh-frequency RFID standard and carrying electronic product codes. This effort is part of the next stage of Wal-Mart's EPC RFID program, which will concentrate on the types of products that have multiple stock-keeping units and are, therefore, a challenge to manage from an inventory perspective, according to Myron Burke, Wal-Mart's director of store innovation, who is leading the retailer's EPC RFID program in the United States. RFID helps Florida shoe retailer keep its customers from walking away

Florida shoe retailer Peltz Shoes has saved approximately 1,500 man hours in the past year by applying a passive EPC Gen 2 RFID tag to every box containing a pair of shoes at each of its four stores, and by employing an RFID-enabled cart to manage its inventory. But that's just part of the benefit, according to Gary Peltz, the retailer's co-owner. In the past 12 months, he says, the company has accomplished five complete inventory counts, consisting of around 30,000 pairs of shoes in each store, whereas previously, the counts typically were managed annually or less often. Bayer Schering Pharma, an affiliate of Bayer HealthCare, is one of the 10 largest specialty pharmaceutical companies in the world, with facilities in the U.S., Latin America, Asia and Europe. Based in Leverkusen, Germany, the company produces parenteralia under stringent hygienic requirements. These drugs are not for oral intake, but are introduced into the human body by injection, infusion or implantation. At the Leverkusen facility, the liquid drugs are filled in primary packages that include bags, flasks and plastic containers. More

The last ten years have seen a changing of the guard in the wood pallet industry. Used pallets, once the ugly stepchild of the business, slowly but steadily have come to dominate the market. While no one tracks just how many used cores, as they're known in the industry, are out there. Bruce Scholnick, president of the National Wooden Pallet & Container Association, estimates that used product currently makes up about 70 percent of the market. The market for supply chain management software applications, maintenance and services came in at $6.2 billion in 2009 including applications for procurement software and $4.2 billion without procurement. That represented a decline of 1.9 percent from 2008, according to Chad Eschinger, an analyst with Gartner. The U.S. Marine Corps has ordered 50 portable deployment kits from Lockheed Martin's Savi Technology to locate, track and manage RFID tagged supplies anywhere, anytime in support of expeditionary force surges in Afghanistan. This most recent order from the USMC Automatic Identification Technology office brings the total number of kits procured to nearly 1,300 kits in the past several years by the U.S. Department of Defense, National Guard, NATO and allied international defense forces.
