Here are some interesting facts on product counterfeiting from a story by Acsis Inc. Counterfiet products represent a serious risk to brand equity, and point to potential failures in the supply chain. Counterfeiting is now one of the fastest growing and profitable industries in the world. With an average of 5 to 7 percent of the world trade market, it is a $600 billion per year industry. The U.S. Customs and Border Protection reports the total number of counterfeit goods increased dramatically in FY 2011 by 24 percent compared to the prior year, and has increased 325 percent over the past decade. If sustainability costs you more, you're doing it wrong
Forbes    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Richard Crespin writes, "There is a lot of anecdotal information on what makes a value chain sustainable, but very little data. To change that, we partnered with ASQ, the Institute for Supply Management, and Deloitte, on a multiyear research study to identify proven management practices and cost-saving approaches, and the initial findings are out." Does SKU proliferation combined with shorter product life cycle complicate the EOQ calculation?
Supply Chain Digest    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
The principal challenge of all retailers is to be able to purchase a sufficient quantity of the correct products so that their stores have items to sell but, at the same time, not too many so as to keep the total on-hand inventory from rising too high. The key question then is "how much?" The calculation of optimal order quantity, known as EOQ (Economic Order Quantity), also known as the Wilson Formula, is based on the optimization of holding costs and ordering costs. More

Mind the gap, mate: A critical supply/demand mismatch
DC Velocity    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Anyone returning from a visit to the United Kingdom is likely to be much taken with the signature admonition from London's Tube, designed to keep people from stepping into the open space between subway trains and the platform, risking either death or life-altering maiming. We have another gap to deal with, and a failure to do so could easily have economic life-altering negative consequences. The gap in question is the comprehensive talent shortage that afflicts nearly every facet of supply chain management. More

WMS talent transcends tiers
Material Flows    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Tom Andel writes, "It's easy to be amazed by warehouse management systems — both by their technological progress and their lack of it. For pure warehousing and distribution, managers have a wealth of WMS choices and they don't all have to be from the pricier Tier 1 shelf, either. As Ian Hobkirk, of Commonwealth Supply Chain Advisors, notes in his recent blog titled 'Do I really need a Tier 1 WMS?' features which were previously unavailable in midtier WMS are now solidly within these providers' offerings." RFID Journal    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
When Littleton, Co., valve distributor and service firm ProTech Sales began its contract 18 months ago with Anadarko Petroleum Corp., to provide maintenance and inspection services for its more than 5,000 valves, the company received a list of each valve's identification, along with its records in the form of a stack of papers, written in pen. The handwritten papers would need to be manually entered into a Microsoft Excel spreadsheet, and inspectors would later, on paper, need to track everything that they did involving each valve. More

The pallet: The single most important object in the global economy
Slate    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
The pallet, that humble construction of wood joists and planks (or, less typically, plastic or metal ones) upon which most every object in the world, at some time or another, is carried. "Pallets move the world," says Mark White, an emeritus professor at Virginia Tech and director of the William H. Sardo Jr. Pallet & Container Research Laboratory and the Center for Packaging and Unit Load Design. And, as stories illustrate, the world moves pallets, often in mysterious ways. More
