Are tolls answer to road funding woes?
DC Velocity    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Experience tells us that no matter how dark the storm clouds, the sun always breaks through in the end. And when it does, one of the first indications will be an uptick in traffic on the nation's highways. As the economy gathers strength, there will be more freight to move. The more freight there is to move, the more trucks on the road. However, our highways are at or beyond capacity, the roads and bridges are crumbling, and things will only get worse as freight volumes rise. More

Do your suppliers put their interests above yours?
@Risk    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Today's supply chains are global, elongated and enormously complex. Of course, that also means they're riskier and more unpredictable than ever before. How can supply chain managers maintain integrity, stability and clarity in what can easily become a nasty hornet's nest? And now that many suppliers feel far-removed from their customers, how can you mitigate the risk of irresponsible suppliers — you know, the ones that put their own interests above yours? More

Verizon report: Most data breaches avoidable
@Risk    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Here's a remarkable statistic: Among the more than 900 electronic records breaches that Verizon Business experts investigated last year, a whopping 96 percent could have been avoided if security basics had been followed. That's right. Nearly all of these breaches could have been avoided — only 4 percent of the breaches analyzed required difficult and expensive protective measures. In addition, most victimized organizations had evidence of a breach in their security logs, but overlooked these red flags due to a lack of staff, tools or processes. More

Demand for air cargo still strong, though slowing
Logistics Today    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
The International Air Transport Association (IATA) has reported international scheduled traffic statistics for July which showed continued strengthening of demand for both passenger and cargo traffic. Compared to July 2009, international passenger demand was up 9.2 percent while international scheduled freight traffic showed a 22.7 percent improvement. The apparent slowdown was due to the fact that by July 2009 traffic was already starting to recover. More

Wire decking industry fights Chinese imports
Material Handling Management    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail
In June 2010, the Commerce Department determined that wire decking from China was both dumped and subsidized. Despite Commerce's findings of unfair trade practices, the International Trade Commission, in a split 4 to 2 vote, found that these imports were not causing injury to the domestic industry. As a result, no orders to offset the unfair trading practices were imposed. More

RFID hardware supply struggles to meet demand
RFID Journal    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Due to an increase in RFID deployments across numerous sectors, following a recession that forced many reader, component and chip manufacturers to reduce production in 2009, integrators and end users are now finding readers, printers and tags harder to come by. In fact, interrogators that typically took four to five weeks to obtain in the past now require twice that amount of time — or as much as 14 weeks after being ordered. More

How to do well and do good
MIT Sloan Management Review    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Can companies do well by doing good? That question is asked frequently, but beware of false choices when considering it. In business, there is not a strict dichotomy between doing well and doing good — it is not an either-or proposition. Instead, social good and profitability are among the criteria by which companies make choices. In reality, any company is better off creating both bottom-line and societal benefits — and creating synergies between them. More

Supply Chain Digest    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
As companies expand, especially midsize companies that are growing at very high rates, order fulfillment can quickly become an issue. While logistics costs are usually rising faster than sales for companies in this situation, as distribution processes become increasingly inefficient, the even more critical issue is often customer service. High growth companies reach a point where they can no longer fulfill orders predictably without a new infusion of technology in the DC. More
