Increasing demand for smaller, urban facilities
All told, there are relatively good times for real estate developers in the logistics space, with demand rising along with a modestly recovering economy, new requirements driven by e-commerce, and in the U.S. at least continued growth in imports. For example, a recent report from real estate firm CRBE said - not surprisingly - that demand is really picking for smaller facilities in metro areas to support rapid order fulfillment for e-commerce, such as same day or even faster delivery.

Goodbye temps? NLRB ruling will have 'big impact'
The National Labor Relations Board ruled that companies that use temporary agencies are considered "joint employers," of temp workers and share responsibility with the agencies for liabilities regarding those workers. In addition, temporary workers that unionize have the right to bargain with the parent company as well as the temporary agency. It's a game-changing ruling, say labor attorneys who work with manufacturers, and employers who rely heavily on temps best not be sitting on their hands hoping it will all go away.

Does your warehouse cut costs or add value?
By Ken Ackerman
As a warehouse manager, is it your job to cut costs or to add value? You might answer that you do both, but which of the two do you do the best? Furthermore, which of the two is more important to your boss, to the client or to the consignees who are your client's customers? If you were to ask chief executives in manufacturing, retailing or wholesale distribution which of the two tasks is most important, I suspect you would get a variety of answers.

What does the future hold for the supply chain workforce?
Logistics Management
As the national economy continues to improve and organizations strive to minimize risk, improve customer service, adopt solid omni-channel processes, and gain competitive advantage, supply chain talent is becoming increasingly difficult to find and retain. Add to the equation the fact that the nation's 73 million baby boomers have already started retiring and the need for better talent retention becomes even more critical.

How extensive is employer's obligation to provide workplace safety?
The New York Times
It is a nightmare for any employer: what to do with a volatile, constantly aggrieved worker who has had angry, even frightening confrontations with fellow workers - yet has committed no crime. Because he had no convictions and had not been adjudicated mentally ill, former reporter Vester Lee Flanagan II was able to legally purchase from a licensed dealer the Glock 19 handgun used in the killings of two former co-workers at a Virginia TV station.

TMS developers blur the lines between transportation and warehouse software
DC Velocity
Supply chain software has historically been split into discrete chunks, which meant users had to turn to a transportation management system to solve one problem, a warehouse management system for another, and an enterprise resource planning program for an overview of it all. These distinctions worked fine for years as the tradition-bound trucking, warehousing and material handling industries caught up to the technology wave sweeping corporate America. But as the digital marketplace reorders supply chain operations, it's evident that the siloed model is no longer up to the task.
