The American Logistics Aid Network asks for help
The Colorado Voluntary Organizations Active in Disaster organization needs to secure some warehouse space. They are looking for about 10,000 square feet to serve as a collection center. The location needs to have adequate parking and a somewhat obvious traffic flow. Ideally, they'd like to have one in Boulder and another in Loveland — another fire started there and is expected to grow based on wind conditions. Contact the American Logistics Aid Network at

Getting the most from your own pallet pool
Modern Materials Handling    Share   Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
As manufacturers and shippers look for ways to get the most from their pallet budgets, they increasingly are looking at recycling and reusing a pool of pallets. One way to do this is to simply rent pallets from one of the established pallet poolers, like CHEP, Peco or iGPS. They will be responsible for retrieving, repairing and redistributing their pallets. You just need to make sure they don't wander off through shrinkage and are in a place where they can be picked up. However, according to a pallet survey, only 34 percent of Modern readers who are participating in a pallet pool are working with one of those third parties. The rest are managing their own pool of recycled pallets. More

Meet the supply chain's young blood
DC Velocity    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
If the recruitment process for supply chain management professionals were conducted like the National Football League draft, then William Smith might be considered a first-round pick. Smith, 22, will graduate in December from the University of Tennessee at Knoxville with two degrees. One is in logistics with a concentration in international business. The other is in Spanish. In theory, Smith sits in the young logistician's version of the "sweet spot." Not only does he enter a field growing in corporate and geographic relevance, but he also possesses the bilingual skills that will enable him to more easily assimilate into foreign markets and cultures than his unilingual peers. 3PL industry outperforms the economy, showing growth in shipment volume and services invoiced
TIA via SupplyChainBrain    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Transportation Intermediaries Association has just released the 2nd Quarter 2010: TIA 3PL Market Report and the results show that, in general, TIA members outperformed the economy. The report, comprised of data drawn from five categories of members based on revenue, showed a growth in total dollars billed in the second quarter of 2010, a very encouraging sign from the marketplace. A particularly noteworthy finding is that total dollars billed by all study participants for all activities were up significantly in the second quarter of 2010, posting more than a 13-percent increase from the first quarter of 2010. The surprising success of the green supply chain    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
One year after Wal-Mart launched an ambitious plan to help its suppliers track their energy and materials use and carbon emissions, the effort officially has become a trend among corporate multinationals. But don't assume these companies are forcing change purely out of their love of the environment. A slow- or no-growth economy is another driver because lower energy and resource costs translate into higher profits. They're going green, but mainly because they're seeing green. More

Bob Trebilcock: AGVs, carts and robots
Modern Materials Handling    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
"What's in a name? That which we call a rose by any other name would smell as sweet," writes William Shakespeare. The caller on the line got right to the point. "I read your robot story," he said. "So tell me: Is an AGV a robot? And is an automatic cart an AGV?" It's an interesting question. It's also one that I think the materials handling industry should be thinking about as more customers look to automation — including some type of automated vehicle — for targeted solutions in the warehouse. P&G building huge China distribution center
The Journal of Commerce    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Procter & Gamble has started work on a China distribution center the consumer products giant said would be the largest in Asia and an anchor of P&G's goal to expand domestic and international distribution through China. P&G, the world's largest consumer goods company, is building the $100 million facility jointly with the local government in Guangzhou, the city about 80 miles north of Hong Kong that is a center of industrial manufacturing in Southern China. The company did not provide details about the site, but published reports in the region said the distribution center would be highly automated and include a real-time transportation management system. Is it time for carbon management to be a corporate strategic priority?
The Green Supply Chain    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
While green supply chain thinking certainly has begun to permeate many companies, has it really risen to the level of board-level priority? Is it time to elevate carbon management to that level of attention and concern? The answer to the first question is largely no, and the second definitely less, according to a new report from the U.K.'s Carbon Disclosure Project, an organization that provides tools and methods for reporting carbon emissions. Supply Chain Digest    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail
There is widespread professional agreement that the skill sets of today's and tomorrow's procurement managers need to evolve rapidly to succeed in a growingly complex supply chain world and to meet the growing expectations of companies for their procurement function. According to recent research by Kay Bayen of the European Institute of Purchasing Management, businesses will need more procurement professionals capable of stepping into the role of "category manager" and capable of thriving in a matrix-style reporting structure. Perspectives on RFID in pharmaceuticals
Healthcare Packaging    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail
RFID is a tool that can benefit pharmaceutical manufacturers from clinical trials through to the commercial supply chain. The Food and Drug Administration and Wal-mart provided a powerful boost for early adoption of RFID in pharmaceutical packaging to strengthen track-and-trace and anti-counterfeiting efforts. However, cost and technology issues slowed its progress. So what's the deal with RFID's use in pharmaceutical packaging today? More

Dan Gilmore: US logistics infrastructure — critical issue or not?
Supply Chain Digest    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
I am often torn (as I suspect many of our readers are as well) when pondering the state of U.S. logistics infrastructure. Recently, President Barack Obama called for investment of an additional $50 billion on top of existing budgets to improve infrastructure in three areas (roads, runways, and rail lines), and creation of a "Infrastructure Bank" that will keep more permanent focus on this issue and in theory a more steady stream of funding for years to come. So the following questions come to mind. More

Bob Trebilcock: Tax credits, automation, human capital
Modern Materials Handling    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
I started writing a column this morning based on a conversation I had yesterday with Sean O'Farrell, business development manager for Witron Integrated Logistics. O'Farrell and I discussed a new picking solution Witron has implemented in Europe and is about to introduce in the U.S. It's sort of a middle ground between a light-, RF- or voice-directed manual case picking solution and an automated storage and retrieval system. But I'm going to digress a moment because I just listened to a discussion on tax credits on CNBC that I think has a direct correlation on materials handling automation, including solutions like the one above. Crown Equipment Corporation, a leading forklift manufacturer, has qualified 20 of its electric forklift models to operate with various fuel cells, bringing the total of qualified combinations of fuel cell packs and trucks to 29. With this accomplishment, Crown has taken a significant step forward for the industry in certifying the performance, efficiency and safety standards of counterbalanced, stockpicker, reach, tow and pallet trucks powered by fuel cells. In 2009, Crown was the first lift truck manufacturer to introduce a fuel cell qualification program. More

Nigerian drug agency opts for RFID anticounterfeiting technology
RFID Journal    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Nigeria's National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control has approved the use of an RFID system to authenticate pharmaceutical products to combat counterfeiters, as well as protect the safety and quality of medications sold in that country. The agency intends to require all Nigerian pharmacies to adopt the system after a large percentage of the nation's drugs are tagged. The solution employs technology developed by Verayo, a manufacturer of what are described as unclonable RFID chips, and readers made by SkyeTek. More

Naturally, every business environment has certain risks. But for many companies, the operational risks in China are the most complex of all. Do you have questions about identifying specific risks in China? Are you taking the appropriate action to mitigate threats there? If you're looking for some valuable insights about these issues, I strongly suggest spending a few minutes with the conversation that that been unfolding at Rich Brubaker's All Roads Lead to China blog. For instance, in a post from earlier this month, Neal Beatty, regional director of Global Client Services for Control Risks, offers some solid advice about identifying, planning for and managing risk in China. Pharmaceutical packaging demand forecast to rise through 2014
Healthcare Packaging    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Regulations and standards that address issues such as barrier protection, patient drug compliance, and diversion and counterfeiting will increase demand for containers and accessories. In its new study, "Pharmaceutical Packaging," The Freedonia Group Inc. forecasts a 5.3 percent annual rise in sales demand through 2014 for pharmaceutical packaging in the U.S., including Puerto Rico. The market research firm predicts pharmaceutical packaging demand to reach $18.4 billion in the U.S. by that year. More
