Cargo theft top supply chain concern in US survey
SecuringPharma    Share   Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Cargo theft is at the top of a list of concerns for supply chain professionals over the next five years, according to a new survey. Almost 75 percent of respondents said that the impact of cargo crime on the supply chain was major or moderate. All told, 81 percent cited large-scale, full truckload theft as a concern followed by less than full truckload cargo theft, vendor security compliance and warehouse burglary. More

FDA launches projects to improve product tracing in food supply chain
@Risk    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
The Food Safety Modernization Act, which was signed into law in January, requires the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to establish at least two pilot projects: one involving produce and one involving processed foods. Recently, the FDA announced that two pilot projects are under way. These pilots, designed to enable both the agency and the food industry to better trace products responsible for foodborne illness outbreaks, will evaluate methods and technologies for rapid and effective tracing of foods, including the following. Forklifter: Delivering justice to willful violators
Material Flows    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
The new TV season is upon us, and after reviewing the upcoming fall schedule I came to this realization: Entertainment is the only industry that can produce 90 percent junk and still stay alive. If material handling equipment producers had the same record, their customers in all manufacturing industries would have been forced to revert to Stone Age best practices a long time ago. But I have an idea for some hit-hungry Hollywood producer for next season. It was inspired by reader feedback from my last blog on the concept of renting a lift truck with an operator. Working title: "Forklifter." More

Achieving a truly 'green' supply chain
IFW    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
In many ways achieving a truly "green" supply chain requires a fundamental shift in attitude and perspective. For the supply chain, time is money. The fastest modes of distribution, particularly air transport and expedited ground freight delivery, are often required as customer-responsive, competitive solutions, but they are also the most energy-intensive. The demands of rapidly changing market conditions that must be met by just-in-time modes of production are an additional requirement for speed — and, all too often, energy consumption. More

Fortune 500 companies are overspending billions of dollars on shipping services according to industry analysis from Insource Spend Management Group, providers of spend management tools. This research echoes findings from a recent Aberdeen Group report, "Integrated Transportation Management in a Capacity Constrained Global Market," which noted that transportation cost relative to overall supply chain performance is the top pressure cited by 57 percent of transportation executives. High-water mark: After months of treading water, German beverage producer adds high-bay storage to its Frankfurt-area DC
DC Velocity    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Water, water everywhere, but no place to put it all. With apologies to Samuel Taylor Coleridge, that was the situation Hassia found itself in. Hassia, the fourth-largest beverage manufacturer in Germany, was experiencing some of the symptoms common to fast-growing businesses. As a result of an increase in both its stock-keeping unit base and its sales volume, the company, which distributes premium bottled water as well as juice and soft drinks, found itself dealing with a serious space crunch at its Bad Vilbel distribution center, a 323,000-square-foot facility near Frankfurt. Homeland Security seeks to commercialize technology for tracking firefighters
RFID Journal    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Three months after announcing the development of technology for tracking firefighters within a burning building, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security's Science and Technology Directorate has entered into discussions with a number of vendors about how to commercialize the system. The solution consists of wireless technology that tracks a first responder's location and condition, and transmits that data via a series of "breadcrumb" routers. The goal is to have the technology in use during the coming year, by fire departments as well as by other companies for which a worker's safety and condition could be in question. More

Supply issues could cripple biofuel use
Fleet Owner    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
A new report by global consulting firm Hart Energy finds that only government regulations mandating the use of biofuels such as ethanol and biodiesel are going to spur demand in the near future, as both fuels remain far costlier than their petroleum-derived opponents. That eventually means not enough supply may be available by the end of the decade to meet the amount of biofuel required to meet government mandates — especially in biodiesel's case. More

Fuel cells: Objections less sustainable
Material Flows    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
It seems the automotive world has been getting all the headlines when it comes to sustainable energy sources. However, I contend much of the progress in proving a particular form of alternative energy has been made off-road—with industrial trucks. And for those naysayers who cite the lack of a hydrogen infrastructure as the reason fuel cells never will go mainstream as battery power has, I ask: what about the potential battery waste stream? Sure electric cars are green — until they reach the end of their life in a few years and something has to be done with all those batteries. Market research firm Frost & Sullivan expects as many as 500,000 depleted battery packs a year will enter the waste stream by the early 2020s. More

Insulating your supply chain against future risks: It can come at a cost
The 21st Century Supply Chain    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Kris Reid writes, "I came across an interesting article today on the Spend Matters blog titled, 'Toyota: Rebuilding and fortifying a global supply chain,' which was discussing the steps that Toyota was taking to insulate its supply chain against future risks from supply disruptions. I thought I would share some of their strategic supply chain initiatives to see what people think. The three main steps Toyota plans to undertake can be summarized as follows." More

'Slow steaming' is disrupting supply chains
Supply Chain Management Review    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Leading global importers and exporters said "slow steaming" in the transpacific is causing them to adjust supply chains, according to a new survey. This mirrors observations made by U.S. shipping associations, who have demanded lower rates on trade lanes served by slow-steaming vessels. They noted that some ports will also be adversely affected. Can the USPS survive?
DC Velocity    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
As the saying goes: "Neither snow nor rain nor heat nor gloom of night stays these couriers from the swift completion of their appointed rounds." But what about insolvency? We may find out in the months ahead. As this issue went to press, U.S. Postmaster General Patrick Donahoe was slated to appear before the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee, where he was expected to seek congressional permission to override anti-layoff language in the agency's collective bargaining agreement with Postal workers. That would pave the way for substantial reductions in staffing. More

The art of asking questions
Harvard Business Review    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
How well do you ask questions? Asking questions effectively is a major underlying part of a manager's job — which suggests that it might be worth giving this skill a little more focus. There are three areas where improved questioning can strengthen managerial effectiveness; and it might be worth considering how you can improve your skills in each one. More

RFID helps golfers stay on the ball
RFID Journal    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Several thousand casual golfers throughout North America and Europe are employing an RFID system that could spare them time otherwise spent wandering around golf courses searching for balls. The system, known as Prazza Golf Ball Finder — developed by a Netherlands startup known as Prazza Group — consists of a 2.4 GHz RFID reader called a finder, as well as two golf balls with built-in battery-powered RFID tags. Golfers can use the finder to direct them to the location of a ball they have hit, and presumably save minutes or even hours of time they might have previously spent searching for that ball. More
