Not enough good supply chain managers to go around

The majority of shippers worldwide are increasing their use of 3PL services, according to the 16th Annual Third-Party Logistics Study, conducted by Capgemini Consulting, in cooperation with Penn State University, leadership advisory firm Heidrick & Struggles and global logistics provider, Panalpina. The report reveals that 64 percent of respondents report a rise in 3PL usage. At the same time, the report indicates an average of 42 percent of total logistics expenditures being spent on outsourcing, the same as last year's study. However, 24 percent of shipper respondents reported some return to insourcing 3PL services, and 58 percent report they are reducing or consolidating the number of 3PLs they use, indicating uncertainty about the global economy continues to affect 3PLs. Cliff Holste: Quick and easy ways to boost DC productivity just in time for the busiest season of the year
Supply Chain Digest    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
There is not much time left before shipping volume begins its traditional buildup toward the end of year holiday season. All approved 2011 productivity improvements are probably implemented by now. However, there still may be time to deploy WMS supported, productivity boosting, functionality that is generally included with the out-of-the-box software, but, for reasons that may have initially made sense, were not fully deployed. The following WMS functions are not new. They have been embedded in most WMS packages since the early days when WMS was the big new thing. While it may not be entirely clear why this functionality was not fully deployed at system startup, it could be that DC managers had their hands full understanding and getting comfortable with all the new technology while deploying the highest priority functions. Get accustomed to Europe's new customs rules
DC Velocity    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
In January, when the European Union began enforcing cargo security rules requiring advance notification of shipment details for imports, European importers were up in arms. An article in a European trade publication accused customs authorities of "creating supply chain chaos." The Shippers' Voice, an independent information portal, reported that some ocean carriers were asking for freight data five days prior to loading on board a ship, even though the EU requires it only 24 hours in advance. The group quoted an importer who said that one carrier had demanded the information, including the container number and seal, before that carrier had even delivered an empty container to the supplier for loading. Jack Ampuja writes, "When business executives — especially those not directly involved with operations, such as a CFO, CEO or general manager — think about supply chain management, functions such as forecasting, procurement, inventory management, transportation and warehousing come to mind. In fact, when I teach supply chain management in the classroom, most textbooks identify 15 related but discrete functions. Unfortunately, packaging usually is not included in the thought process." The group's main objective is to reduce the use of energy in economic activity by at least 25 percent by 2030. Global supply chains will feel 'seismic shift'
IFW    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
The next 10 years will see a seismic shift in the balance of power in global supply chains, according to John Manners-Bell, CEO of Transport Intelligence. He said Chinese manufacturers are developing quickly from low-cost suppliers of cheap goods for foreign original equipment manufacturers into global brands in their own right. Manners-Bell said this shift had been largely prompted by the Chinese authorities, which has encouraged companies to migrate up the value chain. More

Managing the outsourced supply chain: Good decisions can't be made without the right data
The 21st Century Supply Chain    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Carol McIntosh writes, "I recently read an article titled, 'Eight best practices for supply chain outsourcing.' It explained how some companies have adopted these best practices while others have struggled. It boils down to outsourcing the right process to the right partner and establishing clear lines of communication. The difficulty often lies in minimizing the risk of the outsourcing decision. One sure fire way to reduce the risk is by treating your partner as an extension of your business, whereby, information is shared freely without latency." More

Supply chain technology 'pain to gain' ratios
Supply Chain Digest    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Dan Gilmore writes, "There are obviously dozens of supply chain technologies out there to consider, and I can by no means claim to be expert in all of them, but think I know my way around most of them more than the average bear. So, reprising an effort I first did in 2007, with some updates/additions/changes, I am going to list 10 technologies to consider for supply chain and logistics improvement based on a 'pain to gain' ratio analysis. That is, if implemented well, let's assume that some benefit will be realized by each any given technology area (otherwise, what's the point?). But the potential benefits differ across technologies." Accenture: Operational inefficiencies can prove costly
@Risk    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
How much are operational inefficiencies costing your business? A new survey from Accenture and Clearstream found that the financial services sector could save more than €4 billion (about $5.5 billion) annually in collateral management costs by addressing operational inefficiencies. Clearly, collateral management has become a critical industry issue because: 1. Regulators have set more rigorous capital and liquidity standards, and 2. Banks are confronting new cost and growth challenges in the wake of the global financial crisis. Done right, however, efficient collateral management can free up liquidity for banks, enabling them to meet new regulatory requirements while offering more products and services. More

Build your team like an executive
Harvard Business Review    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail
Virtually all leaders espouse the benefits of a strong management team. However, they use starkly different levers to build one. These differences in philosophy and approach frequently differentiate those who advance to and succeed at the executive level — and those who stay in the ranks of middle management. When you ask leaders how they build a strong management team, the answers are revealing. More

Technology's less of a gamble when supply chain validated
Material Flows    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail
Upon entering the Las Vegas Convention Center to cover Pack Expo this week, it didn't take long for me to hear about games of chance. Most of these games involve the chances chief technology officers play when putting their money on technology, hoping it wins their companies big paydays. Certainly it's easy to see how they can be impressed by all the latest material handling and packaging automation on the show floor. The chance comes when betting on whether the technology will translate from the show floor to their plant floor. More

The RFID Lab at the University of Parma's Department of Industrial Engineering, in Italy, soon will begin testing the performance of various makes and models of EPC Gen 2 ultrahigh-frequency RFID hardware for use by European apparel retailers and manufacturers. The program, known as "RFID 4 fashion certified," is intended to determine how well the hardware performs in real-life use cases. When testing of a specific piece of RFID equipment — a tag, an inlay, a fixed or handheld reader, or a printer-encoder — is complete, the laboratory will present the manufacturer of that equipment with a certificate indicating its product has undergone testing for fashion applications.
