Procurement Leaders Network    Share   Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Chief procurement officers at the world's largest companies predict their businesses, unable to manage the range of risks affecting their global supply chains, will lose more than $222 million each, on average, over the next 12 months as a result of supply chain disruptions, according to a recent report. Commodity volatility, adverse weather conditions and a range of other threats featured heavily in 2011 and, despite the measures taken to combat these events, the sentiment among procurement executives is that 2012 could prove to be another costly year. Supply chain executives define social media too narrowly
Logistics Viewpoint    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Many supply chain executives get caught up in the terminology of social media and view it as more work to do and more information to sift through. Instead, they need to take a step back and think through the work they need to get done and then determine how these tools can help them achieve their objectives in a more productive and effective manner. In many cases, it can replace existing tools and practices. More

The supply chain challenge never ends
InformationWeek    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
The big ERP suites are still falling short on sales and operations planning, advanced analytics and supplier management. Supply chain management seems to be stuck in the past. That's even as SCM increasingly occupies one of the hottest of hot seats in the corporate world, and even as companies like Kinaxis strive to bring the supply chain into the future. More

We're green and we can prove it
DC Velocity    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Skeptics once may have considered the movement toward sustainable practices in American business to be a temporary detour from business as usual. To make those practices sustainable, they argued, required more than a social conscience. They required a payoff on the bottom line. That is exactly what has happened. Companies that have embraced sustainability and implemented new practices and technologies in a careful and rational fashion have realized not only environmental and social benefits but financial benefits as well. Why you should 'plan for every part'
SupplyChainBrain    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
The concept of "plan for every part" describes an effort "to create the DNA of your manufacturing operation," says Tim Conrad, director of operational excellence with Gates Corp. It defines all of the characteristics of a manufacturing facility, including the type and number of components, frequency of deliveries and quantity per container. Conrad says its critical to understand how various product families and mixes are deployed to assemble components and finished goods. More

According to the Equipment Leasing & Finance Foundation's November 2011 Confidence Index, confidence in the equipment finance market is 57.4 — up from the October index of 50.7. When asked about his outlook for the future, survey respondent Thomas Jaschik, president of BB&T Equipment Finance, said, "For 2011 the industry is doing surprisingly well given the lackluster U.S. economy." The perfect order isn't so perfect
SupplyChainBrain    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Evidently the concept of the perfect order isn't quite perfect enough. Experts have been telling us for years that the so-called perfect order is the highest goal that a supply chain can attain. Boiled down to the basics, it's a simple concept: an order that is shipped complete, on time, damage-free, to the correct destination. That's a tough enough task for companies to achieve on a consistent basis. But if Procter & Gamble is right — and this $82.6 billion consumer-products giant had better know what it's doing — then the "perfect" order is woefully inadequate as a measure of supply-chain success. Big jump in material handling equipment orders unlikely to last
DC Velocity    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Orders for material handling equipment grew 17.1 percent in the first half of 2011 — a statistic borne out by recent reports that equipment manufacturers are hiring as fast as they can in both engineering and on the production line. That steep rise is unlikely to last, however. Overall, orders for material handling equipment of all types are forecast to grow 11 percent in 2011 but will then drop to a 7 percent growth rate in 2012. More

Supply chain management risk 2.0
Supply Chain Digital    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Ten years ago, an organization could expect to identify its suppliers and have a general understanding of where they operated. These days, a company's suppliers regularly move materials and goods around the globe across dozens of trade lanes, with each supplier maintaining its own supply network. It all adds up to organizations having less visibility into their full supply profile at a time when disruptions — and their impacts — are growing. Effective supply chain management in this global economy requires an approach that encompasses more than just-in-time delivery and insurance against damages. More

2011 warehouse survey
Modern Materials Handling    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Just when we thought things were finally looking up, the results of the Supply Chain Group's 6th annual Warehouse and Distribution Center Operations Survey show that there might be some slowdown ahead. Playing out in front of the backdrop of a shaky global economy, this year's findings reveal that inventory turns are not improving, more DCs are closing rather than opening and many companies are opting to be more cautious, leveraging cost reduction measures that require little or no investment.
