2016 AAGP Annual Meeting theme
AAGP is excited to announce the theme of the 2016 AAGP Annual Meeting will be "New Perspectives on Brain Health and Aging." We are making great strides in our understanding of the brain, its mechanisms, and pathologies. Breakthroughs are being made in our understanding of both normal and pathologic aging as well as in novel strategies to ameliorate age-related pathologies and to improve quality of life during normal aging.

A diet might cut the risk of developing Alzheimer's

Researchers successfully tested a special diet they designed that appears to reduce the risk for developing Alzheimer's disease. The study compared the so-called MIND diet with the popular, heart-healthy Mediterranean diet and the DASH diet, which is intended to help control high blood pressure. The MIND diet borrows significantly from the other two, and all are largely plant-based and low in high-fat foods. But the MIND diet places particular emphasis on eating "brain-healthy" foods such as green leafy vegetables and berries, among other recommendations.More

Alzheimer's disease markers could be identified through protein water mobility

A study of water mobility on the surface of tau protein fibres has been conducted by a global team of scientists using neutron scattering experiments at the Institut Laue-Langevin in Grenoble, France and the Jülich Centre for Neutron Science at the Heinz Maier-Leibnitz-Zentrum in Garching, Germany. The team, led by IBS scientists, found water mobility on the surface of tau protein fibres is increased; the findings, reported in PNAS (Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America), suggest that the movement of water molecules could be a marker for the presence of amyloid tau fibres and contribute to the detection of Alzheimer's disease. Study: New approach identified for treating Alzheimer's disease

A molecule known as P8 could stop the build-up of a toxic protein in the brain which leads to Alzheimer's disease, new research suggests. Using mice engineered to develop the disease, researchers at the University of California San Diego have developed and tested the novel compound, which reduces the production of beta-amyloid, one of the key proteins thought to cause the condition. The team published their findings in PLOS One.More

Scientists discover protective molecule against Alzheimer's disease

South Australian and Chinese scientists have made a molecular discovery through their research into finding a cure for Alzheimer's disease. The research is part of a joint collaboration between groups of scientists led by Professor Xin-Fu Zhou from the University of South Australia and Professor Yanjiang Wang at China's Third Military University. Recently, the research partnership discovered a drug used in the treatment of stroke victims could help stop the progression of the disease. More

Genetic overlap exists between Alzheimer's disease, two CVD risk factors
Researchers have found genetic overlap between Alzheimer's disease, high levels of C-reactive protein and plasma lipids. The findings indicate that high levels of CRP and plasma lipids may play a role in the risk for Alzheimer's disease and lead to new research to determine whether treating the CVD risk factors delays the onset of Alzheimer's disease.
