NIH awarded HIMSS stage 7 for clinical data sharing, EHR use

The National Institutes of Health Clinical Center was recently recognized for its excellence in clinical data collection and EHR use. The clinic received a Stage 7 award on the HIMSS Analytics Electronic Medical Record Adoption Model, according to an NIH statement, making it the first federally-funded clinic to do so. NIH received this highest level HIMSS award by completely eradication its paper medical record use, and streamlining its EHRs by making use of Allscripts Sunrise platforms.More

FDA clears 1st 3-D printed prescription drug

The Food and Drug Administration has approved the first prescription drug made through 3-D printing: a dissolvable tablet that treats seizures. Aprecia Pharmaceuticals said Monday the FDA approved its drug Spritam for adults and children who suffer from certain types of seizures caused by epilepsy. The tablet is manufactured in a layered process via 3-D printing and dissolves when taken with liquid.More

Hundreds of thousands of federal retirees could pay higher Medicare premiums in 2016 than most other enrollees will pay due to a combination of low inflation and a quirk in the law. Most of those retired under the Civil Service Retirement System are excluded from a "hold harmless" provision that keeps an individual's Medicare Part B premium steady if his or her Social Security benefit does not rise enough to cover the increase in those premiums.More
