Could stress be linked to periodontal disease?

Researchers at Tufts University are investigating the relationship between stress and periodontal disease, according to a review published in the Journal of Biological Regulators & Homeostatic Agents. Dental professionals concur that when people don't practice proper oral hygiene, bacteria build up in the oral cavity and take over.

Men and nonsmokers who drink may be at particular risk of periodontal disease

In order to determine whether alcohol consumption is a risk factor for periodontitis, researchers have conducted a study of almost 5,300 Korean adults. Although the study found only a marginal association between harmful alcohol use and poorer periodontal status in general, it suggested that male consumers of alcohol and those who had never smoked were at particular risk of periodontal disease.

Poor dental health is independently associated with a higher risk for all-cause and cardiovascular mortality in hemodialysis patients with end-stage renal disease, new research shows.
