Study: Gum disease linked with atherosclerosis progression
The Huffington Post
The health of your mouth could influence the health of your heart, according to a new study published in the Journal of the American Heart Association. Researchers from Columbia University's Mailman School of Public Health found an association between gum disease and progression of atherosclerosis, which is the hardening of arteries and a big risk factor for heart attack.
Study: Extract symptomatic 3rd molars, improve other teeth
DrBicuspid.com
For many Americans, conventional wisdom says that third-molar extraction is part of growing up. Meanwhile, in dentistry, there is considerable debate about the clinical indications that should lead to third-molar extractions. A new study published in the Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery has found support for the removal of third molars in patients with only mild symptoms of pericoronitis. "Removal of third molars in patients with mild pericoronitis symptoms improved the periodontal status of the D2Ms [distal side of the second molars] and teeth more anterior of the mouth," wrote researchers from the University of North Carolina School of Dentistry in Chapel Hill. Treating gum disease by bringing needed immune cells to inflamed tissue
ScienceDaily
The red, swollen and painful gums and bone destruction of periodontal disease could be effectively treated by beckoning the right kind of immune system cells to the inflamed tissues, according to a new animal study conducted by researchers at the University of Pittsburgh. Their findings, published online in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, offer a new therapeutic paradigm for a condition that afflicts 78 million people in the U.S. alone.

Mobile dentists perform root canals in company parking lots
MarketWatch
On the first and third Mondays of every month, employees at Santa Clara, Calif.-based tech company Nvidia see a familiar site: a massive white van pulling into their parking lot. But rather than carrying office supplies or snacks, it's full of periodontal probes, dental drills and tongue retractors. "It's just like a regular dentist, but in an RV," says Hector Marinez, an employee in the firm's communications department who uses the service. "You go in between meetings and get what you need done." And, yes, that may include a root canal.

Going beyond online marketing: An MD's how-to
Business 2 Community via Yahoo Small Business Advisor
Marketing medical practices is a difficult endeavor. Between competition, time restraints, and knowing what to use and what to say, Web-based strategies are again and again hailed as a number one priority for MD marketing. But like all things business, a pinch of diversity goes a long way. Often, medical practices will rely on an in-house, tech-savvy specialist or an outside source for generating Internet exposure (social media, blogs, websites, etc.) while the practice's staff focuses on going beyond online marketing.

Update on chlorhexidine
DentistryIQ
Mechanical instrumentation, such as scaling and root planning, is an effective method for removing supra and subgingival bacterial biofilm on tooth surfaces, as well as reducing probing depths. It also creates noticeable changes in the subgingival bacteria to sustain a microflora indicative of periodontal health. It does not eliminate all of the periodontal pathogens, due to a number of factors.

It's complicated: Diabetes and your dental health
NAPSI
A recent study in The Journal of the American Dental Association found that 1 out of 5 cases of total tooth loss in the United States is linked to diabetes. While complications are part of managing diabetes, for the nearly 26 million people in the U.S. living with the condition, tooth loss and other dental health problems are unlikely to be on their radar.
What really scares middle-income Americans away from the dentist
The Huffington Post
If you think that lack of access to dental care is just a problem for the poor in this country, think again. More and more middle-income Americans, even those with dental insurance, are finding that going to the dentist for even routine care is not a possibility because of the cost.
