First-Generation College-Goers: Unprepared And Behind
The Atlantic
When Nijay Williams entered college last fall as a first-generation student and Jamaican immigrant, he was—despite being admitted to the school—academically unprepared for the rigors of higher education. Like many first-generation students, he enrolled in a medium-sized state university many of his high school peers were also attending, received a Pell grant, and took out some small federal loans to cover other costs. Given the high price of room and board and the proximity of the school to his family, he opted to live at home and worked between 30 and 40 hours a week while taking a full class schedule.

As most college seniors head back for their final semester of school, Daniel Simon is preparing for a different adventure. Simon, who recently graduated a semester early from Emory University, decided missing a few good parties was worth the opportunity of a lifetime. He overloaded his schedule during the past few semester so he could graduate early and start working at The Gersh Agency, a talent agency located in Beverly Hills, Calif.

Register For The International Student Affairs Study Tour: Ireland And The United Kingdom
ACPA
ACPA is working together with sister associations, faculty from Miami University (Ohio), and partners in Ireland and the United Kingdom to produce an international study tour focused on student affairs. This is an educational tour of very distinct regions—Ireland, Northern Ireland, England, and Scotland—to develop an understanding of the structure and practice of higher education in the region and gain insight into the issues and strategic directions for higher education and student services/affairs in this historic region. The registration deadline is February 18.

10 Top Destinations For U.S. Students Studying Abroad
U.S. News & World Report
The number of U.S. students studying overseas continues to climb, almost tripling over the past 20 years. During 2012-2013 academic year, 289,408 U.S. students studied abroad – up from about 130,000 students in 1998-1999, according to the 2014 Open Doors Report on International Educational Exchange, an annual survey by the Institute of International Education in partnership with the U.S. Department of State. While Europe remained the most popular destination for U.S. students, many Americans also headed to countries outside the region. Costa Rica, South Africa, South Korea, Peru and Thailand saw significant increases in U.S. students in 2012-2013, according to the survey.

Submit A Program For The 2015 Conference On College Men
ACPA
Consider submitting a proposal for the 2015 Conference on College Men. The conference brings together the most diverse and talented educators in the field of men and masculinities research and practice to explore and examine issues related to men and masculinities in higher education. The conference will be held June 18-20 at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. The deadline for programs is next Friday, January 16.

Study Looks At ADHD In College Students
Rhode Island Public Radio
Researchers are collecting data on college students in Rhode Island and three other states, who have been diagnosed with Attention Deficit and Hyperactivity Disorder. Rhode Island Public Radio's Elisabeth Harrison reports the study is believed to be the first of it's kind, following hundreds of college students over a five-year period. The study follows more than 400 college students in Rhode Island, Pennsylvania and North Carolina. Roughly half have been diagnosed with ADHD, the other half do not have attention issues.
