#SAgrow and #SApro were developed in 2010 by Ed Cabellon, Director of the Rondileau Campus Center at Bridgewater State University (Massachusetts), to use technology to support student affairs professionals seeking mentoring. The program has been tremendously successful over the past 18 months and ACPA is excited to be partnering with Ed to expand and build upon the program’s excellent foundation. In the next few weeks, ACPA will share more details for those who currently are participating in the program as well as for those who would like to become part of an encouraging and supportive mentoring community. Report: Democracy Faces 'Crucible Moment,' But Colleges Can Help
The Chronicle of Higher Education (Subscription)    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
American democracy will confront an increasingly bleak future unless colleges make civic learning a central part of students' education, says a report released by the National Task Force on Civic Learning and Democratic Engagement. "This is a moment of serious reckoning for our democracy," said Carol Geary Schneider, president of the Association of American Colleges and Universities and one of the members of the task force that produced the report, "A Crucible Moment: College Learning and Democracy's Future." It was commissioned by the U.S. Department of Education. More

Catherine Rampell: College-Educated Workers Gaining Jobs, High School Grads Losing Them
The New York Times    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Still don't believe that college is worth it? Just look at the latest jobs numbers. In December, workers with bachelor's degrees or other postsecondary educations gained jobs. On the other hand, the number of workers with high school diplomas or less who were employed fell. Workers with at least some higher education have been doing better than high school grads for a while now, too. More

Don't Blame For-Profit Colleges For Higher-Ed Lobbying Epidemic
Reuters via The Atlantic    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
The last two years have not been kind to for-profit colleges. Claims of widespread fraud and abuse have led to multimillion dollar lawsuits, increased scrutiny from Democratic policymakers, and a new set of regulations designed to hold for-profit institutions accountable for their graduates' future employment. The for-profits responded as most firms in the cross-hairs of federal regulators do: They hired lobbyists. Lots of them. More

New Data On Teacher Education Begins To Flow
Education Week (Subscription)    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
There's a ton of new data on the state of teacher education beginning to come out, and it's ripe for analysis, if — and it's a big if — you know where to look. Now, those requirements have begun to generate data, beginning with the U.S. Department of Education's newly released report on the teacher preparation and credentialing in the U.S., and filtering down to states' and individual institutions' reports.
