Study: US College Students Seek Treatment For Alcohol More Than Drugs

U.S. college students seeking treatment for substance abuse are more likely to be have trouble with alcohol than with abuse of drugs like heroin, cocaine or methamphetamine, according to a new government study. Researchers at the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration analyzed data from 2009, when about 374,000 people between the ages of 18 and 24 were treated for substance abuse or dependence in the United States. Black Students Seeking Action On Racial Climate At Duke

A group of Black students at Duke University are continuing their push to force college administrators to improve the racial climate on campus, calling on university officials to allocate more financial resources and support to improving the plight of students of color. About two dozen students in the Black Student Alliance recently met with top university officials to present a document — the Black Culture Initiative — which they say is aimed at encouraging reform at the private research school in Durham, N.C. ACPA Past President Profile: E.G. Williamson

E.G. Williamson was the 10th president of ACPA and began his presidency just prior to the start of World War II. Williamson served as coordinator of the student personnel program, professor of counseling, and dean of students during his tenure at the University of Minnesota. In addition to serving as ACPA president from 1941-1945, he also served as APGA president (1967-1968). Further, Williamson served as the chair of the 1949 Student Personnel Point of View. More

Today, fewer Americans than ever believe one requirement of citizenship is to right the wrongs in our nation. So says a recent report by the American Association of American Colleges and Universities released recently at the White House. The report, called "A Crucible Moment: College Learning and Democracy's Future," warns that the United States is nearing the point of becoming a "citizen-less" nation where the majority sit on the sidelines pointing out, complaining about and urging others to act. So what do we do in the face of this dire scenario? The report recommends that colleges and universities begin to make civic engagement central to the college experience. The preparation for democracy, they argue, is as important to our nation's future as is learning to write, count and prepare for a career. More
