For Students Who Transfer, Lost Credits Can Doom College Hopes
Reuters
Credits lost in the transfer process are a major reason why students who start at community colleges fail to eventually complete a four-year degree, a new study shows. The research by two City University of New York academics found that one in seven transfer students has to essentially start over because their new institutions accepted less than 10 percent of the credits they earned. Those able to transfer half or less of their credits are dramatically less likely to get a bachelor's degree, according to doctoral student David B. Monaghan and education professor Paul Attewell of the Graduate Center of the City of New York.

More College Students Transfer, But They Don't Exist In Federal Data
U.S. News & World Report
The National Student Clearinghouse just did something the Obama administration couldn't do: tracked the graduation rates of transfer students. The problem? More students are transferring between colleges, and they aren't included in federal calculations of outcome measures that soon could affect how much federal aid the colleges receive. More than 3,500 institutions, which enroll 98 percent of the country's college students, submit information to the nonprofit, which is able to put out yearly reports on measures the government isn't able to track.

Students Don't Actually Care That Much About College Rankings
The Huffington Post
Although college rankings play a significant role in the decisions that colleges and universities make, few students actually pay attention to them, according to a report issued last week. The American Council on Education published a report Wednesday explaining why President Barack Obama's pursuit of a federal rating system for colleges and universities won't bring about the improvements the administration wants from schools. As evidence, the ACE points out that existing college rankings already introduce havoc and uncertainty to the higher education system.

In addition, some recent big-name endeavors like New York University Shanghai and Yale-NUS College in Singapore add to the perception that more institutions are building overseas campuses. In reality, branch campuses form only a small proportion of the internationalization activities and models of transnational education engaged in by institutions.
