Universities In The Heartland Prepare For Severe Weather Season
USA Today
In the Southern Plains, springtime brings more than just green grass and warm temperatures — it also brings some of the most violent weather in the country. From April to June, America's heartland is threatened by massive hail and tornadoes. For universities in Tornado Alley, destructive weather poses an even greater threat. As thousands of students and faculty live on campuses throughout states like Oklahoma, Kansas and Nebraska, their lives are left vulnerable to a climate that can change in an instant. For some students, though, the benefits of going to school in this region outweighs the risks and when the storms start rolling in, they will be ready.

For Some College Students, The Cap And Gown Makes Graduation Day Too Costly
Bloomberg Business
As her May 19 commencement date looms, Yana Dey has begun considering skipping her own graduation. It’s not that she wants to miss it. She's proud of the work that went into fulfilling the requirements for a master’s degree from Columbia University’s Teachers College. What's holding her back is the $62 cost of the cap and gown she's required to wear to walk at graduation. "I started to worry, because I just don’t have any extra money to spend right now," says Dey, who began posting on Facebook groups in May to try to borrow past graduates’ regalia. "I honestly thought about not going."

3 Key Findings About College Admissions
The Chronicle of Higher Education
If your vice president for enrollment looks haggard these days, maybe it's because the percentage of accepted applicants who enroll keeps going down, complicating those all-important revenue projections. Or maybe she's scrambling to attract more transfer students to the campus. The best strategy for recruiting foreign students? Everyone's trying to figure that out, too.

Sexual Orientation, Gender Identity Tied to Eating Disorder Risk In College Students
Reuters
Transgender and non-transgender lesbian, gay and bisexual college students seem to be at the highest risk for eating disorders, according to a new study. As reported in the Journal of Adolescent Health, the study involved students at 223 U.S. universities — including more than 200,000 heterosexuals, 5,000 who are "unsure," 15,000 who are gay, lesbian or bisexual and 479 who are transgender. This study is the first to include enough transgender people to make meaningful comparisons to other gender identities, said Alexis E. Duncan, the study's senior author from George Warren Brown School of Social Work at Washington University in St. Louis.

Expanding Pathways To ACPA Leadership
ACPA
Understanding how and why individuals choose to get involved in leadership roles in ACPA is critical to our organizational health, stability, and sustainability. It is important to explore and understand reasons individuals choose to get involved and continue involvement as well as possible barriers that prevent and limit involvement.

In the process of trying to ensure that ACPA's leadership pathways are open to all and reflect the values of the association, we are holding four focus groups over the next couple of months to continue to gather information about the facilitators and barriers to engagement.

Specifically we would like to learn more about experiences of the following populations of ACPA members:
  • Black and African American cis-male colleagues, under the age of 35
  • Native, First Nation, and Indigenous colleagues
  • Trans, Gender Queer, and Gender Non-Conforming colleagues
  • Latino/a colleagues
If you would be interested participating in one of these focus groups, please contact alex@acpa.nche.edu by 1, June, 2015 . We are particularly interested in talking with people who are not currently in an ACPA Leadership position, nor have held one in the recent past.
