Academic standards, schedules and friendships aren't the only things that change when freshmen head off to college. The rules and regulations for technology use evolve, too. High school students may be accustomed to illegally downloading movies or picking on Facebook friends on their own laptop in the basement. But experts say incoming freshmen should realize that on college campuses, certain digital behaviors can be caught and punished.

The Princeton Review has published its Best 379 Colleges for 2015, polling 130,000 students to produce ranking lists covering issues from academics to extracurriculars — and everything in between. These kinds of rankings are very interesting to read, and can give excellent insights into the type of college experience a particular school offers. One list rates colleges by how happy its students say they are while attending. What a great idea — after all, who doesn't want to be happy during their college years?

US Tops Shanghai University Rankings, China On Rise
University World News
American universities have again outranked more than 1,250 other higher education institutions around the world in the annual Shanghai Jiao Tong listing of the global top 500 universities. And for the 12th year running, Harvard was placed number one. The global Academic Ranking of World Universities, or ARWU, was released on Friday with the usual long list of United States universities taking 16 places in the top 20, 52 in the top 100 and 146 in the top 500.

Many forces can drive a male college student to commit sexual assault. But one of the most important may be the company he keeps. A number of , on college campuses and elsewhere, have shown that having friends who support violence against women is a big risk factor for committing sexual assault. Now prevention efforts are exploring the idea that having male friends who object to violence against women can be a powerful antidote to rape on college campuses.

U.S. News University Connection
It's no secret that college students are increasingly dependent on their mobile devices, with laptops and smartphones among some of their most prized possessions. While only 27% of students had smartphones in 2009, a whopping 73% of students now use these gadgets, according to a press release from Ball State University. From emailing and texting to checking social media sites and listening to music, students rely on them to stay connected.

Call For Applications: Developments Editorial Board
ACPA
Developments is a quarterly online publication that connects ACPA members to current issues, trends, and scholarship in higher education and student affairs. Applications are being accepted for:

Associate Editor for Series is a Senior Member of the Editorial Board. This individual is responsible for working with potential Series Sponsors and Authors, assisting in the development and review of manuscripts, and tracking Series through the publication process.

Reviewers and Copy Editors work with authors, regular columnists, and Association leadership on the development and editing of articles, promotes Developments and writing for publication at ACPA functions, and works on administrative projects.

The application deadline is September 5, 2014. Terms for both positions will begin in October of 2014.

Our theme this year is Student-Centered Assessment: Voices, Data, and Meaning.
