Students Seeing Need For Social Media Classes
USA Today
Marc Torrence noticed a change in his popularity after covering his first University of Alabama football game — he gained thousands of followers on Twitter. "Even if 10 or 15 other people are tweeting the same quotes from (head coach) Nick Saban at a press conference, I get tons of retweets," Torrence said. "Everyone wants to know what Nick Saban is saying." Torrence isn't the only college student increasing his professional interest in social media. As schools across the nation develop social media programs, students are finding out it might be a necessity.

Why Are Research Universities Going Global?
University World News
Despite the significant increase in the number and type of international activities — from branch campuses to MOOCs and aggressive international student recruitment — many institutional efforts appear to be launched without a clear idea of best practices or how specific activities might be productive and meaningful for a particular institution. Empirical knowledge of how and why institutions expand these activities, and whether they are successful, remains largely anecdotal.

The Healthy Minds Network (HMN) Groundbreaking Research
ACPA
The Healthy Minds Network (HMN) is sharing groundbreaking research on gatekeeper-trainings (GKTs), a widely used campus mental health intervention. HMN researchers recently conducted the first large-scale, multi-site study of a campus-based GKT, delivered to resident advisors on 32 campuses across the country. In HMN's latest research brief, the researchers present the main results of this study and their implications for practice and policy. The findings and their relevance for campus administrators will be the focus of HMN's upcoming webinars, which are free and open to all. The GKT Webinar sessions will take place on Wednesday, September 18 (3-4pm ET) and Monday, September 23 (12-1pm ET), with content the same at both sessions. RSVP to healthyminds@umich.edu with your preferred date in the body of the message. Visit www.healthymindsnetwork.org for more information about HMN's many initiatives, including its campus-wide surveys, which are currently enrolling colleges and universities.

Should Students Use A Laptop In Class?
The Wall Street Journal
There's a widely shared image on the Internet of a teacher's note that says: "Dear students, I know when you're texting in class. Seriously, no one just looks down at their crotch and smiles." College students returning to class this month would be wise to heed such warnings. You're not as clever as you think — your professors are on to you. The best way to stay in their good graces is to learn what behavior they expect with technology in and around the classroom.

Report: College Enrollment Plunges By Half Million Students
The Associated Press via WNEW-TV
A new report finds that college enrollment has plunged by approximately a half million students in comparison to the previous year. Statistics compiled by the United States Census Bureau in "School Enrollment: 2012" showed that college enrollment fell by 467,000 students in the fall of 2012. It was the reverse of what the bureau previously observed after 3.2 million enrolled in college between 2006 and 2011. The bureau found that the decrease was caused by the lack of students enrolling in college after reaching age 25 or older. The enrollment of that age group fell by 419,000, while enrollment for younger students went down by only 48,000.
