The American Council on Education and a group of 36 higher education associations sent a community letter to Congress on Oct. 14, asking members to reject the massive cuts to Minority-Serving Institutions (MSIs) proposed in the House Labor, Health and Human Services, Education and Related Agencies Appropriations Subcommittee draft FY 2012 funding bill. More

Colleges Fail U.S. Financial Test

A total of 150 private nonprofit colleges failed the U.S. Department of Education's most recent financial-responsibility test, which covers the 2010 fiscal year, according to data released by the department. More than half of them scored so low that they will be required to post letters of credit to remain eligible to participate in the federal student-aid programs. More

Colleges Use Custom Textbooks to Cut Overall Student Expenses

Students across the nation have been expressing their concerns with the rising costs of textbooks. According to CollegeBoard, the average bachelor's degree seeker at a public college spent approximately $1,137 on books and other supplies during the 2010-2011 academic year. To highlight the strain such fees can place on students, thousands of individuals have participated in the Textbook Rebellion initiative. The high cost of college textbooks is not a new development, and higher education professionals have been searching for a solution to this issue for years. More

The 2012 NASPA – ACPA Conference theme is Sustainable Strategies for Student Success and will be held February 1-2, 2012 in Doha, Qatar. This conference is jointly endorsed by both ACPA and NASPA. Presentation proposals should relate to the conference theme and one or more of the functional areas within the student affairs environment. This includes, but is not limited to, presentation topics relevant for student housing & residence life, orientation programs, admissions & recruitment, student life & activities, student governance, counseling & wellness, athletics & recreation, student conduct, multi-cultural issues, student affairs administration, service learning, alumni affairs, sustainability issues, and staff development. Program submissions are due on October 31, 2011. More

Enrollment Soaring at State Colleges Over Decade

Enrollment in public colleges and universities reached a 10-year high this year, growing nearly 23 percent since 2001, figures released by the state Department of Higher Education show. The increase was largely driven by higher enrollment at community colleges, which grew nearly 28 percent, the education department said. More

'Drunkorexia' Common with College Students

The combination of disordered eating and heavy alcohol consumption known as 'drunkorexia' is common among U.S. college students, researchers say. Victoria Osborne, assistant professor of social work and public health at the University of Missouri, examined the relationship between alcohol misuse and disordered eating, including calorie restriction and purging. The study found 16 percent of those surveyed reported restricting calories to "save them" for drinking, and of the respondents, about three times as many women as men reported engaging in the behavior. More
