An Update From Heidi Levine, ACPA President

article
The excitement is palpable! This past month has been a time of incredible member engagement and energy. I've come to think of October and November as "State Division Conference Season," and one of the perks of being ACPA president is having the opportunity to visit with our State Division members at those gatherings. I, along with ACPA Executive Director Greg Roberts, Vice President Keith Humphrey, Past President Susan Salvador, and other members of the Governing Board, have attended almost a dozen state conferences over the past six weeks. At those conferences we’ve had the chance to attend outstanding workshops, hear inspiring speakers, share news about what is happening on the national agenda, and — best of all — talk with members about the issues that are most important to them. Survey Highlights How Technology Is Used In Higher Education
US News University via U.S. News & World Report    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Although many individuals think college students only use technology for personal communication, various studies have shown that electronics can be useful in academia as well. To paint a clearer picture of how technology is being used in higher education, the nonprofit Educause recently released the results of its 2011 National Study of Undergraduate Students and Information Technology. The report shows that a majority of undergraduate students own various technological devices. More

Northeastern Opens First In A Planned Series Of Graduate Campuses Across US
The Chronicle of Higher Education (Subscription)    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Northeastern University opened a graduate campus in Charlotte, N.C., the first step in a far-reaching plan to expand across the country, form research partnerships within cities, and take advantage of regional needs for specialized workers. In its pursuit of a new, more entrepreneurial model of higher education, the private Boston institution plans to break out of the private-research-university mold and open up shop at satellite campuses around the country, including California's Silicon Valley; Austin, Texas; Minneapolis, Minn., and Seattle, Wash. The university hopes to open the Seattle campus next year. More

Student Loan Group Lashes Out At Obama Proposals
Reuters    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
President Barack Obama's proposed student loan repayment relief programs are too narrow, a group representing nonprofit and state agency student finance organizations said. "We are disappointed by President Obama's 'Help Americans Manage Student Loan Debt' proposal," said the Education Finance Council in a prepared response. "By focusing only on a limited group of students, the proposal does little for borrowers struggling to repay student loans in today's distressed job market." More

Opinion: Helping Students Govern Themselves For Safety
The Philadelphia Inquirer    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Ask national security officials where the greatest threat to the homeland lies, and they're sure to tell you it's in ungoverned territory — those areas around the world where the absence of law and order allows terrorists to operate without fear of reprisal. In colleges, too, ungoverned student behavior can disrupt order and threaten safety. A small subset of students who ignore the social contract and do what they want, when they want to, can have a disproportionate impact on a campus. They can compromise the quality of life of all students and waste huge amounts of staff time and money. More
