Penn State Students Clash With Police In Unrest After Coach Is Fired
The New York Times    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
After top Penn State officials announced that they had fired Joe Paterno, thousands of students stormed downtown State College, Pa., to display their anger and frustration, chanting the former coach's name, tearing down light poles and overturning a television news van parked along College Avenue. The demonstrators congregated outside Penn State's administration building before stampeding into the tight grid of downtown streets. They turned their ire on a news van, a symbolic gesture that expressed a view held by many that the news media exaggerated Mr. Paterno's role in the scandal surrounding accusations that a former assistant coach, Jerry Sandusky, sexually assaulted young boys. article
In recent years, online education has become increasingly popular at colleges and universities across the country. According to the 2010 Sloan Survey of Online Learning, about 5.6 million people took at least one web-based class in the fall 2009 semester. This marked a 21 percent increase from the year before, compared to a 2 percent growth in overall higher education during this time frame. As online education establishes itself as an important part of higher education, many academic professionals have discussed whether or not it can give students the same academic results as campus-based learning. Opinion: A Troubling Milestone For Higher Education
New America Foundation (blog)    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
According a recent U.S. Department of Education report, higher education has reached a troubling milestone: the country’s public and private four-year colleges are now spending a greater share of their institutional aid dollars on trying to attract the students they desire than on meeting the financial need of the low- and moderate-income students they enroll. The report from the Education Department’s National Center for Education Statistics provides the clearest picture to date of how colleges, under the sway of enrollment management consultants, have fundamentally changed the way they spend their institutional aid dollars, to the detriment of low-income students. Bloomberg News via San Francisco Chronicle    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Many parents in the U.S. are legitimately concerned about the prospects for their college-age children.
